Pidgin: Logs Deleted with new install (Ouch!!!)

Hi All,

I just recently updated my 1.6 version of PA with the new 2.0Beta5. When I started Pidgin...none of my accounts (over 10) were there...and ALL of my logs (about 5 years worth) were all gone. I'm clear that there is no way to get them back...but I wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem? I also wanted to know if it's now good practice to backup all Pidgin Accounts and logs BEFORE doing an upgrade.

Any guidance at all would be welcome.

Thanks All.

Platform Installer Doesn't Touch Apps

The platform installer doesn't touch the PidginPortable directory or the directories therein (Data and it's subdirectories). The platform installer, including the beta, does not include any applications nor does it alter any application directories.

It only modifies two files in the root of the drive (autorun.inf, StartPortableApps.exe), ensures the Documents and sub-folders exist and have custom icons and then removes anything in the PortableApps\PortableApps.com folder (except for Data) and installs to there. The only way it would have deleted your logs is if you somehow managed to move them to the PortableApps\PortableApps.com directory, which I don't know is even possible.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Running Non-Portably?

A general question to all: Is it possible that Pidgin was launched directly, not via the launcher and so it's actually running from a blank profile in "My Documents" somewhere and not from the portable profile? That would explain why everything is seemingly gone.

@rgarriso, have you actually checked your portable location to see if the files really are gone? (\PidginPortable\Data\settings\.purple)

re: Running Non-Portably..

Thanks for the reply Darkbee and sorry for the delay. I have checked the portable location and the files are definitely missing. And there are no \pidgin or \purple files on the local machine at all. And while I don't recall starting the APP directly (ie. not using the PA Application Manager) as I never have before....I also can't rule it out.

Since no one else has reported it, it seems to be just an error of my install. It could have been anything, but I'll keep an eye out for it the next time, and I'll back up my logs next time (which is only good computing anyway).

Thanks Again.

hidden?

.purple might be hidden due to the dot at its beginning, if you haven't selected "show hidden files" (or so...) in folder options.

Linux Only?

Does that apply to Windows? I thought that was just a Linux thing.
