Hey guys,
Ive done something who people might be interested in doing themselves.
I downloaded firefox 4 beta 4 portable edition from here at PA.com
I also went to Mozilla's site and downloaded firefox beta 5.
Then, I ran the portableapps.com installer and the firefox 4 beta 5 installer
Canceled portableapps.com when it wanted to connect to the internet to download the files, and copied the fresh install of beta 5 to the 'app\firefox' directory
Seems to work fine.
For all those who aren't into portableapps creation, you still have the same icons and the same splash screen, but you will have firefox beta 5 installed.
I hope people do try this and have fun

Alternatively, you could also just update with Firefox's built-in one, considering the bug with firefox's installer is fixed.

I thought that was a no-no in terms of PortableApps? Are you saying that it no longer breaks portability? (And if you're using a full release, beta's don't show up in the Firefox update, unless this is a configurable option? I assume if you're using a beta already then betas do show up?)
It is still definitely recommended that you only update by installing paf downloads from here, however, that said....
The know-to-be-bad bug where the firefox updater ate the registry settings of an installed copy has now been resolved in the current firefox builds, so from that perspective, it should fail too horribly.
There are no known issues as of this time that actively prevent the updater in the firefox betas from successfully and non-destructively updating the portable beta version. But then, it is beta software, so your mileage may vary
But yeah, if you really really wanna play with the latest version of the 'fox, then download whatever beta installer is here, and then hit up the update button. Just make sure you have a backup of anything that matters to you, just in case
Well Jimbo, I just hit that update button and kicked up to beta 6. It still seems to work fine (funnily enough), but that said, I havent really done that much testing - time will tell.

in that the beta firefox works well enough as a beta for firefox. But how does it work as a portable apps firefox? Nothing is for sure about the traces and dll's until the folks here release it.
