Portabilizing Spotify...

is against the terms and conditions of use as I read them, especially this line:

"For the avoidance of doubt, you agree that you may not (without limitation):
iv. reverse-engineer, decompile, disassemble, modify or create derivative works based on the Spotify Software Application or the Spotify Service or any part thereof;"

Might even cancel my subscription to them over this...

All I can say is their damn right hypocrites..A company which develops a software which relies heavily on the agreement of musicians to stream their music. A company constantly fighting for rights to stream artists music, will not let people create a profitless, portable application of their software. I sit currently at University, with the inability to install software for security reasons. I pay £9.99 for a service which claims to offer me portability, yet because I do not have a fancy smart phone or tablet computer I am eliminated from this equation. Grooveshark is the alternative which is free and browser based. However, I'd rather pay for the stability of a software but if I can only access it from home, I might as well just use iTunes.

Way to go Spotify, lost yourself a customer.

Not quite

Premium members can download music off Spotify to their local hard drives, thus being able to listen while in offline mode. I would assume that this would give you the ability to play them in any old mp3 capable program.

Unfortunately that is not the

Unfortunately that is not the case.
The premium membership is just for the additional features such as offline playback, while the music remains playable only through their client applications.

If you want it on a portable device, it has to be one with a Spotify client, and it has to be synced first from either it own internet connection or from your PC.

The free account has pretty severe restrictions on playback, actually limiting you to a fixed number of plays for any given song.

It was when I was looked, and proceeded to dump spotify for that reason limited to 3.

The paid membership removes that restriction.

If at first you do not succeed, use more sticky tape.

Ahh ok, I've never actually gone premium to see, but their website propaganda reads differently.

Regarding the free version there is no limit on how many times you can play a track. I have listened to the same two albums at least once every two days for the last month and a half and have not been restricted in any way.
