Since such simple things as
apt-get install gimp-help
don’t work on Windows, does anyone have some insight for me if (and how) it is possible to install the latest GIMP Help into the portable version 2.6.11?
I’d prefer using both English and German versions, switched by PA’s language setting (like GIMP’s GUI language itself), if anyhow possible.
Any suggestions?
That's all
Hey, Bart, thanks for the heads-up — much appreciated!
A good place to download the most current (work-in-progress) help files is the GIMP Documentation download page (in tar.bz2 format). Just expand these and copy the appropriate 2-letter language subdirectory (i.e., "de" or "en") into the X:\PortableApps\GimpPortable\App\gimp\share\gimp\2.0\help folder (create if needed). Et voilà!
No need to run Windows installers this way.
The help browser still needs to be fetched elsewhere.
EDIT: Fetched helpbrowser.exe from the old 2.4.7 Windows installer, copied it over into the X:\PortableApps\GimpPortable\App\gimp\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins folder, fired up GIMP Portable 2.6.11, went to Edit -> Preferences -> Help System -> Help Browser and set Help Browser to use to GIMP Help Browser.
Voilà again! Works like a charm and switches languages as per PA Menu language setting. Thanks again for your help!
Downloading the *.tar.bz2 is the version for geeks.
Just a note: The *.tar.bz2 files aren't more current than the setup files (Release date 2009-10-01, same as the release date of the setup files).
Hjælp! Oi muſt be a geek! }:)
(Maybe you’re right. I’m just contemplating on how to repair the vertical window sizing bug in the "GIMP Background Window" plugin. And where to find the source.)
This info needs to be on the main page

I can't make this work. Help.
I did figure out I can put a shortcut to the help index.html file in the same directory as GIMPPortable.exe (and make sure the help folder is on my portable drive).
Not exactly satisfactory, but better than nothing.
I'd like to figure out how you did it.
Thanks

it's all described above. The important thing is that helpbrowser.exe and the help files are located inside the correct folders.
Older versions of GIMP for had a specific help plugin to display help files.
As of 2.6, GIMP for Windows is distributing its help files as HTML files, which will display in your web browser.
I believe that there were problems with this plugin on Windows.
See here for the official word on this, and links to dl the help files:

EDIT: I found this as a DL for GIMP Help Plugin for 2.6:

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.
