Hi, my portable apps icon keeps disappearing from the windows 7 task bar, it happens every couple of weeks or so.
I assume that this happens occasionally while the removable drive is not connected and windows is trying to tidy up things for me by removing broken links, but I can't figure out how to turn off this behavior.
There doesn't seem to be anything in the task scheduler that sounds like what I'm looking for. I've tried turning off all of the system tuneup tasks in Norton.
Anybody else having this problem?
I assume you are referring to a "pinned to taskbar" app.
If so, this happens to me as well. I think I have narrowed down the issue. If you pin/unpin a app to the taskbar, then the taskbar is refreshed at that time. If you do not have the drive with PAP on it, then the pinned icon for PAP is removed. I have also noticed that if I do not have my PAP drive plugged in when Windows is loading, then the PAP icon stays pinned. However the icon is changed to the generic white page icon instead of the nice PAP one.
Edit: I just tried it again (pin/unpin app) and the PAP icon stayed in place, even though i had my drive unplugged. I will play around with it some more and see if I can figured out how to reproduce it.
It amazes me that on the internet you can be anything you want, and yet so many people still choose to be idiots.
Windows 7 does not permit pinning to taskbar for things on removable drives, technically. It should not even show a 'pin to taskbar' option. If it does and you can pin it, it will disappear as soon as the drive is disconnected.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Mine sticks around for many days whether I have the drive connected or not. It's true if I start up the machine without the drive connected I get a broken link icon, and if I start it up with the drive connected I get a valid icon, but it doesn't go away as soon as I remove the drive, It only disappears on random occasions when something happens I'm not sure what. I bet there must be some registry hack that will force it to stay.
I think what John is referring to is if you have PAP installed on a USB thumb drive. I have PAP installed on a external drive and it shows up under "Hard Disk Drives" in explorer. Where as my thumb drive shows up under "Devices with Removable Storage". With PAP on my thumb drive I do not have the option to pin to taskbar.
