Shortcuts

This may sound like a silly question but how can I make shortcuts in my flashdrive to open applications? I know how to make them but they don't work on a different computer once I have made them.

It's not a silly question

but it could do with some more details.
Are you talking about shortcuts to official PortableApps?
Are you using the PortableApps Platform (a.k.a. PortableApps Menu)?

If you are talking about creating shortcuts the same way you do on Windows desktop or in Windows Explorer, that won't work, because they can't use relative paths; so when you plug your drive into another computer, the drive letter may change, and absolute paths fail.

You need to use a launcher application to make shortcuts that use relative paths.
The PortableApps Platform is the best solution for official PortableApps, since it supports backup, updates, etc for PortableApps. It has it's limitations though.

There are a few other launchers out there that you can use. My personal favorite is Cylog Toolbox. Why?
- It's very flexible
- It supports links to apps, folders, files, drives
- You can drag items onto the toolbox
- You can convert your links to relative paths with one click
- You can associate your links with a specific app
Lots more.
I prefer the most recent beta version

And Welcome to PortableApps!

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.

+1 Toolbox

I second Cylog Toolbox! Very user friendly, simple interface but powerful. I've taken to using a two menu setup for my portable apps, the first, ASuite contains all of my portable apps, and the second, Toolbox contains my most frequently used portable apps. Most of the time Toolbox is sufficient.

Welcome to PortableApps.

@solanus, Thanks for the welcome & all of the information, you've just about covered everything I was asking. I actually was referring to shortcuts to Portable Apps. I shall have to look into this more now. The world of portables is quite new to me.
