uTorrent and FFP

Hello,

I have the latest available portable versions of uTorrent and Firefox, however the problem has been occurring for pretty much as long as I've been using these two programs - a long time.

I have setup FFP to recognize .torrent files and once I click on a link that contains a .torrent file in it, it would start uTorrent Portable, eg. open it with uTorrent. OK, so the problem is that sometimes it all goes exactly as it should - the FFP opens up uTorrent Portable with the new torrent dialog. But here's the problem - sometimes it opens the uTorrent installation dialog.

I have no idea why would it do that?

portable?

What exe did you register in firefox Portable?
utorrent.exe inside the /App folder or uTorrentPortable.exe inside the main folder?

uTorrentPortable.exe inside

uTorrentPortable.exe inside the main folder

BTW: Something I forgot to mention - this installation dialog thing happens only if uTorrent is not already started. If it is running then there are no problems - the torrents open up as they should.

OK So everything was fine

OK So everything was fine with the previous version, until I upgraded to the latest one available inside portableapps: uTorrent 2.2 (23774).

So I'm thinking maybe the problem is in the launcher? Did you guys change the launcher from the previous version?

Not Really

A total of 9 lines were added to the launcher to specifically handle the new directories that uTorrent uses for their new built-in 'apps' to portablize those. Other than that, every line is exactly the same.

Well that's just weird...

Well that's just weird... I'll try downloading the previous version and see if anything will change.

BTW: Your site says the version is 2.2 (23703) whereas uTorrent itself says it's 2.2 (23774), just saying...

EDIT: Just tried installing the previous version from here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/portableapps/files/uTorrent%20Portable/u...

And it does work OK. Firefox opens uTorrent with the download/save menu instead of the Install one that the current version does.

Not The Launcher

I'd wager it is uTorrent itself that altered something. You won't know unless you use the old launcher with the new uTorrent (which means stuff will be left behind due to the new apps thing). As for the version, uTorrent regularly 'kinda' releases updates. My local copy is 23703. If I check for updates, there are none. If you download from utorrent, it is 23774. There's no notification on the site or way to check if there's a new release reliably, unfortunately.

Just did some quick analysis

Just did some quick analysis because really I don't have any idea what to look for, but...

uTorrentPortable.exe has the exact same file size and date for both versions (2.2 and the current build). The files inside uTorrentPortable\Other\Source\ look identical as well.

So nothing seems to be new at my end.

Is there any chance you uploaded the old launcher instead of the new one?

BTW: Just to clarify - I did a fresh install of the previous and current versions, as well as using the utorrent I work with, on top of which I installed the new versions - eg. it wasn't a clean install.

App\AppInfo\Launcher

The launcher configuration is in App\AppInfo\Launcher; the executable may be the same without it meaning anything special. Almost all of the PortableApps.com Launcher's configuration is done at runtime.

Nope

uTorrent uses a custom launcher and has a custom replace routine.

Just an update to let you know that I haven't updated uTorrent or the launcher and today it opens up how it should... This is now getting beyond my imagination.

Just a quick update to let

Just a quick update to let you know how I've fixed the issue... kind of by accident.

I simply created a shortcut for uTorrentPortable.exe and told Firefox to use the shortcut to open the .torrent files. It works like a charm now.

Just in case someone else ever experiences such issues.
