This is what you need do.

By default, Pidgin only comes with its own set of emoticons. "Default" by Hylke Bons and "None" by Penguin Pimps.

If you want to add emoticon support for all the IM protocols supported by Pidgin, then I suggest you follow the link and download the "Original Smileys Theme for Pidgin"

http://wiki.andreineculau.com/Original_Smileys_Theme_for_Pidgin

|How to Install

When you download the file, it will be named something like,

    "pidgin-original-latest.tgz---original-smileys---pidgin---projects---files.andreineculau.com"

As you can see, this is a .tgz file. I use 7zip and I suggest you use it too. At least for this, so everything works right from the start.

-Open the file with 7zip. Inside there is a file called "Pidgin.emotes.tar" Double click it.

You should be able to see a lot of folders here. Starting with pidgin-original all the way to pidgin-original-yahoo-big

You are to extract-to/copy this files to:

\PidginPortable\App\Pidgin\pixmaps\pidgin\emotes

Now you have added full emoticon support. You can now send and see the emoticons your friends are intending to send you.

HINT: If you want for each protocol to use its own set of emoticon, then make sure that "Smiley Theme" setting is set to: "Original Smileys"

That setting is under: Tools >> Preferences >> Themes

NOTE: If you set the setting under Smiley Theme to anything else other than what I mentioned above, that will become the main smiley theme for all protocols. Moreover, if for example, your friend is on AIM and you've the Yahoo Smiley theme as your default smiley theme, then you wont be able to see the AIM emoticons, nor that of any other protocol.

-----------

MSN Custom Smileys

Those wont work on Pidgin. I'm not talking about the default MSN emoticons, but the annoying ones added by the end-user. The ones normally used to replace words.

e.g. [crazy sparkly "I"] want some [picture of some animated "cake"] for dinner [animated image of a night starry sky "tonight"]
