Minor fixes and additions were the main changes in this release.
I would appreciate testers, as always, especially since this can now be released as an official portable app!

Works for me.
Started fine on 1st run, on 2nd, I get a dialog: "To use XML features of the Launcher you must set [Activate]:XML=true and then regenerate the launcher. Continuing, but [LanguageFile] will not be used."
Don't know if this is related to my changing language from AutoDetect to Danish within the game - didn't seem to have any effect until game restarted, but that's probably as it should be.
When starting the game (both on 1st and 2nd run) the game starts with the nice map, and a large blank square in the middle of the screen - but clicking the mouse brings me to the "FreeCol" main menu, dunno if this is related to anything.
Oh, yes... I forgot to activate XML support after I added the switching from the XML options file.
I fixed that as well as another minor mistake in AppInfo.ini. Expect Dev Test 3 very soon.
As for that, I believe that is the movie which plays before the title screen.

Thanks to AlleyKat, a few more errors were discovered and quickly fixed. Most notable was that the language switching directly from the language options file (although, really, in theory that shouldn't work anyway) was fixed by activating XML in the launcher.
Keep the tests coming!

That fixed the XML error dialog.
Still no movie playing on start screen, but I suspect the problem's in my system - .ogg is for some reason associated with Winamp instead of VLC, and the first frame of the movie can briefly be seen on my background when closing FreeCol. Could also be my dualscreen setup confusing the playback, I guess. No matter.
RegShot seems to be clean, too, if I'm reading it correctly.
0.9.5 Dev Test 4 has been posted, cleaning up the app and fixing some errors.
Also, I've created a test for 0.10.0-alpha, which is the latest version in development by the FreeCol team. Have fun testing it and its various feature improvements!

DT4 - works fine, regshot seems clean as snow, response time in the interface seems to be improved somewhat.
0.10.0 alpha DT1 - works fine, but gives the XML error that was reported for DT2 on 2nd run. Regshot clean, and works just fine otherwise.
Also, the movie issue reported is now confirmed to be just on my desktop, works just fine everywhere else.
Due to how the executable has a different name from the app in the unstable test, it caused an error during compilation. It's fixed.
Also, if you wouldn't mind, could you test if both work properly from the PortableApps.com Platform? It should, but I don't want to take any chances.

That is where both was tested from (beta 5). No issues found, ran fine. Didn't try with both at the same time however.
Hi, ...
FreeCol Portable 0.9.5 Development Test 4 (Work)
FreeCol Portable (Unstable) 0.10.0-alpha Development Test 2 (Dont Work) = after splash screen, nothing it close the software loader.
Also, it need Java Runtime. Then when Java Portable is installed, it work.
Yes, it runs off the PAL's feature of running Java apps, either from a local copy or by jPortable.
As for Unstable, I have no idea. Can you check the Data directory for a log file?

It should work despite that exception. From my testing, it created that file automatically when it didn't exist.
The fact that it works on 0.9.5, too, is a bit weird. Is there anything else in the log file? Also, try copying over the Data directory from 0.9.5 to 0.10.0-alpha and see if that fixes anything.

Hi, ...
@thesupremecommander
Ok, ... now the game work, but the error is still in the log.
The log is probably left over from its first run.
I'll post an update tomorrow which adds DefaultData with a vanilla options file to get rid of the log messages and other problems. If you could test that one, that would be helpful.

Hi, ...
FreeCol Portable 0.9.5 Development Test 4
New installation of FreeCol, i decompress with double-click the, "FreeColPortable_0.9.5_Development_Test_4.paf.exe" file.
= Why "freecol" inside the sub-directory "FreeColPortable" ?
A mistake in the installer creates that directory in the root app directory instead of App.
It's been fixed in the latest Development Test.

I've posted Dev Test 5, which knocks out a few more errors that were reported thanks to sst. The unstable version has been updated to fix these errors as well.
Keep testing!

Hi, ...
FreeCol Portable 0.9.5 Development Test 5
Please include "appicon_128.png"
See below, ...
https://portableapps.com/development/portableapps.com_format#icons
P.S. I know it's optionnal = "appicon_128.png", but i have Windows 7 x64, and i use "large, and sometime extra large icon sizes" to view inside my game desktop directory.
Thanks in advance, please respond me soon as possible.
That won't affect the launcher though because launchers only include 16/32/48.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

I cant see the intro video = When in FullScreen. It's even on the not portable version. I have to use the parameter "--windowed" = i know it's in windowed mode but it made that i can see the intro video.
Then can you please made a portable lancher, that use the "--windowed" parameter.
Please create 2 portable launcher file, that have the name =
FreeCol Portable (Windowed Mode) = "freecol.exe --splash --windowed"
FreeCol Portable (FullScreen Mode) = "freecol.exe --splash"
You'll have to file that with FreeCol itself, if it indeed occurs on the desktop version. Strangely, I've run FreeCol with fullscreen on Windows 7 and haven't had problems.
As for multiple launchers, unless the need is great, I won't implement two launchers. That would be consistent with the other games published currently. You can always add the "--windowed" parameter to App\AppInfo\Launcher\FreeColPortable.ini, since the launcher does check for the values in that file.

I had the same problem - under my nVidia gfx card. Disappeared when changing to my ATI card. So, seems like a driver-specific problem.
Hi, ...

I try it and it display the video, inside FreeColPortable is in windowed. But when FreeColPortable is in fullscreen, no video.
Yes, I was merely suggesting a workaround for when you wanted to see the video. I don't know how to actually fix the problem besides that. Like I said, I'm having trouble reproducing the problem.
That being said, if you want I can file a bug with FreeCol.

Strangely, I thought I had posted this post before, but it appears I haven't.
Anyway, 0.10.0-alpha2 was released a few days back, and I have updated the unstable package accordingly.
It seems like 0.9.5 DT5 will be the last test before 0.10.0 is released, but I will fix any bugs in the launcher if any pop up before then.
Thanks as always for testing FreeCol Portable!

Can you update?
thx Tal
Can you Update, there was a version in the new year (2013).
I know the FreeCol will be official till PortableApps.com find solution
to license with java.
But in mean while can you update?
Thanks,
Tal.
I'm not sure if anyone else has tried this, but I downloaded the latest precompiled-zip from freecol.org/download.html. I then deleted \PortableApps\FreeColPortable\App\freecol folder (just to be sure) and extracted the zip into the PortableApps\FreeColPortable\App folder (replacing the freecol folder). I ran the FreeColPortable.exe and everything seems to be the latest version.
I haven't had much time to play or test it, so I haven't seen any errors or odd behavior. If anyone has better way to update, or runs into issues, I'd love to hear about it.
Hope this helps.
exactly as SirBob did. The only other thing I did was to update the appinfo.ini file, and make a new PAF file with PA.com Installer. I have a copy here for anyone that wants it. I will not be updating this, but anyone else wants to, feel free. Peace.

About a current version I would be very happy.

Hey, it's been about 2 years since the last update to the game. If possible, it would be great to get an update to freecol, since from the looks of things this version may be the last for a while.
