in the help of emerge desktop i did read that it is allready portable..
it is free and open and cool
a portableapps install (standalone/suite/menu) would be great
i have used the search function and found nothing ;(
thanks in advance
This looks very interesting... call me a pessimist but now I'm just waiting for the catch.
Not sure if you'd be able to make this portable but it would be pretty darn awesome if you could. Talk about customized, personalized desktop.
Think I might have to go confuse a few people at work temporarily with this one.
All options available in emergeDesktop are saved in XML files, making not only the visual themes and styles fully portable, but the whole Shell replacement, providing the portable media drive letter stays the same in a given pc using Emerge Desktop.
Well typically that's one of the things the a PA.c launcher will take care of so the drive letter shouldn't be a problem.
However, it seems there are other usability issues, most notably in my case is that my Anti-Virus (F-Secure) hates it. It blocks things left and right, and no matter how I add exceptions or allow certain programs to run, F-Secure still finds a way to make my life a misery. I'll have to give ED a try at home where I don't have F-Secure and see if other anti-virus software give it such a hard time.
Overall though, I like ED, it's pretty flexible and allows you customize your desktop to high heaven. Would certainly be a very interesting (read: unique) addition to the PortableApps stable.
once the emerge desktop runs there is a right click option to change the shell

standart is emerge desktop and explorer and more can be added
after a shell change is applied the system needs to restart and it starts with the choosen shell
so there you can add more alternate shells if you like
.. here may a overview http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_shell_replacement
maybe such a function can be handy in a portabble app system

to change the shell quickly at anytime is very friendly
i dont know if this function comes from a emerge desktop addon or from the core it self ... but i use it often :))
and i think such a function in a portable system makes much sence
i use now emerge desktop since some time and i like it very much

some how i miss all my 100000 desktop icons (they are now in a menu folder ;( ) but in the other hand i think emerge desktop i a high win in productivity and customization
i think ED should be a portable apps standart

I'm using Emerge Desktop at the moment. I'm not sure it would integrate easily with PortableApps. Since it requires you to reboot, I'm not sure how that would work, unless there is a reboot free alternative usage that would have to be standard on the PortableApps version.
Plus, many shortcuts assume that particular apps always exist, and in a certain place. You could have a quick launch for MS Office, but it wouldn't work on a PC without MS Office.
I have a PAF version of emergeDesktop posted here.
