I've made a few apps portable for my personal use, but this is my first attempt at making one to share.
The only thing I've noticed so far is that it seems to leave something behind here :
Application Data\Mozilla\Extensions\{33cb9019-c295-46dd-be21-8c4936574bee}
I'm still looking into that one.
I was thinking about taking this one on, but why an online installer? Instantbird is open source...

In my mind I guess I just thought the online installer would be the best way to go, but I guess it makes sense not to do it that way. If they remove or change the source file on their end then no one can install your app (and you also don't have to fool around with the download installer configuration). Next release I'll package the whole thing.
Is this still in development?

As this is similar to SeaMonkey, Sunbird, Thunderbird and Firefox (in terms of installer, download and launcher), I could set the build environment to automatically build all 11 packages of this once we have the launcher solidified. The 1.0 source has already been added to the SourceForge project for GPL purposes.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
EDIT: Please disregard request as I hadn't realised the OP was still maintaining this. @dougakins Sorry. Didn't mean to step on your toes.

Hey John.
If you did not have the time to develop and maintain Instant Portable, I could try to do so with some assistance.
I have tried to use the launcher with Ember Media Manager Portable but have not been able to get my head around the documentation. If you could set up the build environment and provide some guidance I would be very happy to maintain the app.
Again some guidance on how to to begin with would be required.

@horusofoz - no problem. No toes stepped on here.
It's been a while since I started this so I'll have to go back through a few things to refresh my memory. I'm going to try and update this to 1.0 on Tuesday - so things may have changed with the new version, but do you have any experience with the extensions folder mentioned above?
Could you please update to version 1.0 thanks!!
I can try and have it updated this coming Tuesday.
Thanks :DD
Updated Instantbird to 1.0. Did a test run of it - installed it, set up an account and installed a plug-in. Everything seemed to be clean after closing.
I also set it up to remove the Mozilla/Extensions and Mozilla folder in AppData if empty - not sure if this is how you normally handle it or not.
Thank you sooo much i would donate if i could
Works perfectly
