As we know, FF4b10 is not currently available for download. However I saw you have recently published, in the beta10 page of this site, the following notice:
--Beta 9 is available and may be auto-updated to Beta 10--
Which could be a perfect solution of the "problem" to all people who have already downloaded and installed beta9. My beta9, actually, has already asked me to let it update to beta10.
The reason why I did not answer "yes" to that proposal comes from what I read in this forums some time ago, when I asked whether letting a Portable App upgrade itself was the same as downloading the new version from here and then upgrading by means of a new installation.
I was answered no, I was told it's not the same thing; I was advised to disable any auto-update features inside the apps and to always update them the "proper" way. Which I have always been doing since.
So I'm a little confused now...
PS. Obviously this whole issue is a very trivial one, as I can perfectly survive without beta10 for a few days and, maybe, even more :]
Anyway I'd like to well understand the upgrade issue from a technical point of view.
In general, don't use internal app updates; however, with Firefox, since about 3.6, its internal updater works fine and in a portable manner; unless there are internal launcher changes (which probably won't matter much) the effect is the same as a portable app update (except the launcher's version number won't be changed, as well).

I suspected something like that, but I prefer to be sure.
I think this information (the internal updater being compatible with portability) could and maybe should be shown somewhere, for example in the release notes or in the Portable Apps' page.
It's in the FAQs in the Firefox support forum.
