GnuCash Portable 2.4.0 Pre-Release 1

I've posted a pre-release package of the new GnuCash 2.4.0 release for folks to test out. It's mainly a big bug-fix release but as a major point-version (for GnuCash) I wanted to ensure all was working properly before pushing this out to everybody. So if we could get a few people to test this out quickly and report back, it would be much appreciated!

Works O/K

John,

Thanks for updating GnuCashPortable. I have taken it for a quick test drive, and all looks fine. Do you plan using the new launcher for this at some stage rather than the updated NSIS script? Anyway, it's good to see it done, and I am sure that this will be a popular update.

Thank you again.

Thanks John, One Glitch Thou.

I made a backup copy of my existing GNUCashPortable. Installed the new version over the top and noticed it said upgrading.....

GNUCashPortable never loaded after install. Tried several times. Noticed the launcher would start and another file name gconf or something, then the launcher would quit.

Uninstalled the entire app and installed a fresh copy of the new version and it loaded just fine.

I will copy my data folder at this point and see what happens.

WFM

Updated my existing released with this one, no problems found (win7 x64).

One detail, the installer, on the first dialog where you hit the "Install" button, froze for around a minute or so - it may have been doing something like deleting the existing version, looking thru the files or whatever, it was enough to have win assign it a "not responding" in the title but it did complete and install, and runs just fine.

I do think earlier version looked for (or saved per default) project files in the Documents folder, this opens the GnuCashPortable/Data/Profile folder - this is by design I suppose, and I may remember wrongly. Doesn't really matter.

McAfee Viruscan Issue

Detected msvcr90.dll as a problem.

By searching the forums there seems to be an issue when this file has been compressed by UPX?

I searched for the file name in my PortableApps directory and got 11 hits. All were 641KB except RedNotebook's was 638KB and K-3D's was 267KB

So I copied the whole folder Microsoft.VC90.CRT from the FeedNotifier app and placed it in PortableApps\GnuCashPortable\App\GnuCash\ and it is working now.

So far, so good

I installed 2.4.0 PR1 into a whole separate directory from 2.2.9, then loaded my old profile into 2.4.0 after it (uneventfully) started up and then saved it as a distinct profile inside the 2.4.0 directory structure. All looks good so far, although I cannot say that I have been setting new standards for stress testing. (The real test of 2.4.0 will be on a Mac I also have GnuCash installed on. There were a couple of obvious gaps in the Mac version features.)

One question: The GnuCash.org site instructs one on how to compile the program to use WebKit rather than GtkHTML as the HTML rendering engine. Which engine does the 2.4.0 Portable version use? It sure looks similar on the surface of things.
