Unless I've missed something we have a severe lack of RSS / News readers (Decent ones). I've been using BRIEF in FireFox for a while now, but I want to seperate it out to make my FF experience much more streamlined.
I've downloaded the portable variant of GreatNews from (http://www.curiostudio.com/) and thus far it looks good. It is open source:
QUOTE: "The complete source code of GreatNews is now available at GreatNews development board. The source code is released to open source community under GPL license. Hope we will have talent developers joining in to help improving GreatNews! [01/04/10]"
Any chance

It appears the 1.0 beta release was the first version with the source code and it has not been updated since then (10 months ago), which makes it looks like it's an abandoned app. Someone may still wish to pick this up, but I'm not sure what the state of it is in terms of bugs, etc.
Unfortunately, many news reader software apps were abandoned once Google Reader took off. Do you know of any others that are actively maintained that fit the bill feature-wise?

Unfortunately not, I had a quick look for 'Portable RSS Readers', but this was the only one that closely matched my needs. I might look some more or even look at what Google Reader is like, only checked out a few times.
You don't have to find a portable RSS reader. Just a good one. Preferably not Java or .NET-based. And open source is better.

I was going based on the Blog which is usually what most of these apps treat as News and post new releases. It hadn't been touched since April 2010
