Cube and Sauerbraten Crash

When I play cube or sauerbraten it crashes after a couple of minutes. The entire screen freezes and the only way to get out is with control+alt+delete But it only happens in the multiplayer mode with bots (in all game modes). Campaign mode works fine. I am on Vista x64. The normal sauerbraten install (not portable version) works fine, and my drivers are updated. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks.
On a side note:
I googled it before and someone said to paste a new code into the stdshader.cfg file. I tried it and it fixed the crashes, but everything became colored in bands of dark brown, all the textures vanished, and it was impossible to see anything.

Hmm.

I don't see how the portable version would at all cause this where the original installs wouldn't. Our packages don't change the base app in anyway except to move the data directory. From where do you run the portable versions (a USB?) and from where did you run the original installs?

More info..

I was thinking the same thing, it makes no sense why one works and the other doesn't. I run the portable app from my usb flash drive and I used to run the normal sauerbraten install from my C:\ drive. I just remembered that the normal installed sauerbraten was a very old version, so I'm going to try and install the new version and see if I have a similar problem.

Found a way

I don't know why Cube 1 would crash because it always has worked for me, but I can solve the Sauerbraten problem. First, go into the SauerbratenPortable folder and then Apps, Sauerbraten, then launch the sauerbraten.bat file. This way, it won't crash (if it doesn't respond, just wait), plus it will keep all your settings. In my opinion, the first 2 suck but Sauerbraten rocks balls.

Doesn't solve the problem.

That doesn't solve the problem, as that's how the base app is launched. If this is indeed an issue, there's a problem with the launcher and we need to figure out how to fix that.

Err...

Well, I had the same problem as he/she did when launching the normal sauerbratenportable.exe file, and it always crashed. I don't know why, but when I launched the normal sauerbraten.bat file, it didn't crash, plus it kept all my settings.

Curious.

The launcher sets the data path via a command line switch, the .bat file doesn't. I'm not sure why it's keeping your settings.

settings

are saved in the \PortableApps\SauerbratenPortable\App\Sauerbraten folder and kept there. everything else is clean. so its just that the settings are in the wrong place.

I know that.

Now that I think about it though, I'm no longer curious. I was responding with the assumption that he had already had settings and they were kept after switching from the portable .exe to the .bat file, but if it crashed for him then he wouldn't have had settings to begin with.

That IS the problem

That was what I was trying to say. I tried modifying the SauerbratenPortable.txt or whatever it is to see what it was launching. That is the main problem, as it is trying to launch the sauerbraten.exe file in the BIN folder. That isn't what the original game used. It used the sauerbraten.bat file to launch, and I tried modifying that, but it would not start, or it would launch the normal sauerbraten.exe file. How the heck are users supposed to modify things if there's a bug? I wanna use my PortableApps Launcher to play the game!
