HI,
Just wondering if anyone knows of a freeware registry editor and app that can:
(other than editing .reg files also:
compare 2 .reg files with options to:
Select the differences in either file and output a selection to a new .reg file.
(I.e in such a way that these differences could be then easily inserted into the system registry by way of this new .reg file)
P.S i have just browsed the web and installed about 10 reg apps and the ones that look promising are either too complicated, don't install or require you to purchase them.
PPs i already tried comparing 2 reg files with regshot etc and then manually editing but somehow managed to maul the edited file
Thanks
Ideally i think I would like to see an app that does this specifically.
i.E it would show the 2 files in different panes with different colors for Added, missing, keys + entries and also separate colors for modified ones.....
I.e you could have little palettes/legends down the bottom of each window showing the different highlight colors and you could click on these icons to select/unselect all these different areas across the whole file ETC....
Then I would like to be able to select keys from either file by color and merge and output the selection to a new .reg file.
I like the "big list" interface (not the reg tree) and also i think little tick boxes next to each entry/key etc would be cool... this way it would present like one of those taged html editors ETC and you could quickly select keys etc by ticking boxes then delete, invert selection, cut & paste or copy to other side ETC...
Also i think other than this, even a "one click" option to automatically find all the Registry entries that are new or changed (in the second window Vs the first) and output them to a new reg file would be cool.
perhaps some kind coder can modify an existing open source reg app to accomodate this cool functionality?
If you want to compare two files (of any plaintext type) I recommend WinMerge.
P.S. I'm not sure how exactly you "maul"ed a .reg file, but if you tried merging it into your registry, you've probably "maul"ed your registry too.

Hey,
I'm open to ideas (obviously)...WinMerge you say?
Thing is: i want to copy only the difference between two reg files to an new one...
Can WinMerge do this? (is it difficult)
Thanks....
FYI I mauled the reg file by manually editing out the keys i did not want in a text editior when i ran the .reg it came up with an error box something about "error accessing registry" ?
But any reg files I have not edited in this way obviously worked right away.
Also i am using a "guinea Pig" windows install on a seperate drive to experiment so no harm done.
Thanks for your comments
I don't know how you could cause that error by editing a .reg file.
WinMerge has 2 Panes (left and right) for the 2 files being compared,
Lines that are the same have a white background, lines that contain differences have a muted yellowish-orange colored (IDK what to call it) background, and lines that only exist in one file only appear in that file (with the different background).
(Note: Folders can also be compared)
I don't think it would be too difficult to do what you want.
(Note2: =there is a PortableApps.com release of WinMerge so you don't even have to install it to try it out ☺)

FYI ("I don't know how you could cause that error by editing a .reg file.")
This is the problem!?
When this is in the reg file - cannot find registry? when i take this out (no probs)
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_WNTPPORT]
It seems that Merging in previously nonexistant Keys inside of
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum
is disabled (or something)~3D1T0R
I posted this today, but not seeing it???
You can use an app I made to clean the patch generated by WinMerge, works well with non-Microsoft installs/uninstalls.

I have to say that your site looks pretty sketchy. I for one would never download anything from it.
If it is legit, then I would suggest putting a little time into your website. If it's not legit, well then I guess leave it as is...
It amazes me that on the internet you can be anything you want, and yet so many people still choose to be idiots.
