I run portable apps from a network share. When logged in on an XP machine Chrome works fine (except that I can't install extensions automatically - I have to download them, unpack them and then manually install them) but when I use the exact same installation on a Win7 machine Chrome launches, and then nothing. It opens the tabs from the previous session, the loading indicator is spinning but nothing is loaded. I can't even open the "about-pages" such as the bookmark manager, list of installed extensions (none ATM) or history. They behave like regular web pages: the tab opens, the arrows spin - and nothing.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Chrome (most recent version) and also deleted the profile. Other apps such as putty or pidgin runs fine on the same W7 machine and, as I mentioned above, Chrome runs fine on another machine that runs XP.
On Portable Apps 1.6.1.0. Enabling logging on Chrome just returns the following:
[1280:2912:15962178:VERBOSE1:.\installer\util\install_util.cc(93)] No existing Chrome install found.
[1280:1152:15962505:VERBOSE1:.\common\sandbox_policy.cc(176)] dll to unload found: mdnsnsp.dll
[1280:1152:15968028:VERBOSE1:.\common\sandbox_policy.cc(176)] dll to unload found: mdnsnsp.dll
Are you accessing it via a drive letter? Most apps will work properly from a mapped network share provided you launch it from the mapped drive or a shortcut pointing to it. Chrome, however, has been found to behave differently and it's hit or miss. You may have better luck with Firefox, Maxthon or Opera.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
