Google Chrome Portable 10 Stable

When starting Google Chrome Portable there is an error message "Your preferences file is currupt or invalid. Google Chrome is unable to recover your settings."
Deleting the whole folder of Google Chrome Portable and reinstalling it anew does not help. There is still this error.
Regarding John's assumption "NTFS drive with improper permissions": It's installed on a USB stick with FAT32. My assumption is that there might be some problem with the portalization of Chrome. Previous versions did not have this problem.

More Information

Please provide more information including installation path, Windows version, any other software or antivirus that is running, etc. I am unable to reproduce this issue on my own systems.

Windows' CHKDSK

I think he means to try running Windows' CHKDSK (which you can easily use to check your flashdrive by clicking Options > Check Drive For Errors from the PortableApps.com Menu) and see if there is a problem with it (which it might be able to fix in this way too).

However, if it is in fact a problem with Google Chrome Portable, then you'll need to post more information (as John T Haller said above) or we won't be able to track it down.

I run CHKDSK with "automatically fix file system errors". This fixed the problem.

Thanks.

When I type about: in the omnibar and hit enter

I get this:
10.0.648.133 (Official Build 77742) dev
>>> "dev" instead of stable.
The same thing happened with the previous version.

Local install?

Chrome gets the channel from HKCU\Software\Google\Update\ClientState\{8A69D345-D564-463c-AFF1-A69D9E530F96}\ap, and this value is not changed by the launcher, so or 1) you have Chrome dev installed locally, or 2) you had Chrome dev installed locally.
When you use it on a computer without Chrome installed, the channel will be not shown.

Again: local install

The value of the channel field is not hardcoded in the application; it is in the registry key I mentioned earlier. Try changing it to beta or empty and check the version again.
BTW: if Chrome is not installed, the channel will be unknown.

I have in the past

downloaded stable, beta, dev, and Canary versions of Chrome directly from links here: http://dev.chromium.org/getting-involved/dev-channel

Though I didn't have any Chrome version on my PC at the time I downloaded the paf.exe I referred to above.

but I still feel I shouldn't have to edit the registry in order to download a portableapps.com software. Why is my PC's registry being "consulted"?

Informative only

The channel will not affect the browser; it is informative only.

Thanks for taking the trouble

to respond but I really, really don't understand what's going on. If I'm using something, I'd like to have the proper user agent string, version number, etc.

I've not faced this problem before with other portableapps.com software.

I'll regretfully just have to leave off using Chrome Portable until some kind soul explains what's going on in language I can understand.

It Means Nothing, Ignore It

The channel you see in about affects *absolutely nothing* within the portable browser itself. Nothing at all. It is solely to indicate what channel is selected on the *local* install of chrome (if there is one) and that is what the Google Updater (not included with Chrome Portable... and the local install of it does not interact with the portable browser) uses to determine when an update is available.

It does not affect the useragent. It does not affect the version number. It does not affect Chrome usage. It does not affect which browser you get from the PA.c Updater.

Just ignore it

Don't worry about the channel, is the version number (10.0.648.133) that matters.
