In case anyone is having problems getting their flash drive to autorun, Microsoft's March 16th update to WinXP disables autorun on flash drives. I let them install the update last night, before I read about it. This morning my USB drive would not run the Portableapps platform.
A simple uninstall solved the problem...just FYI.

this is a known issue, it turns off auto run on all usb devices, to get around this I created a desktop icon for it

A desktop icon is only good as long as the drive letter hasn't changed.
Unfortunately, it looks like autorun is dead and won't be coming back.

permanently place my PA drive as drive Z so it never changes

Autorun is fine -- just uninstall that update. When Windows offers to install it again, just click the "Don't tell me about it anymore" check box.
Then, be careful what you stick in your USB port!

Have always used either a desktop link in opened drive & clicked on portableapps --- Being one of those cautious types I realised a while back its a good idea to have autorun disabled if usb stick gets used in more then one computer .. minimises malware risks
Don't uninstall the system patches

Too many tables you can't turn
Don't wanna live my life in the real world
In addition to that: Better use microsofts fixit tool for that. It leaves the update in place and just alters registry keys to set the desired functionality.
If someone dares to mess in the registry by himself, it can be set with policies.
Be warned that enabling autorun again opens a closed security hole.
Details here.
Autorun for portable devices is part of the past. It doesn't even exists on Windows 7.
It's the best way to prevent dissemination of certain types of viruses.
uninstall solves it which i have done it
