Remove a blocklist addon

FFP V. 3.6.11, I have this addon called Metastream 3 plugin, it has a red exclamation point and everything about it is grayed out, I want to remove it how do I do this ? It's been disabled in FF because it is on some blockllist and I can do anything via the addon manager, so I would imagine this will be a particular folder to delete.

manual delete

Go to the about:support page in Firefox (Help > Troubleshooting Information). Find the folder ID of the add-on. Do a search for this in Windows. Delete the folder.

I have found that Firefox Portable will not let me delete local add-ons from the add-ons manager.

Not showing.

It's not showing it, I go there and it shows the extensions, it's a plugin so then I clicked about:plugins, that takes you to the installed plugins page but sadly, it's not listed. That is good info though thanks.

If it is a local plugin

You will probably have to perform this on your local install of Firefox, not your portable install of Firefox.

I used to have a sig...until one of the mods ate it

safe mode

You can start Firefox Portable in sfe mode by starting a commandline window and launching "D:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\FirefoxPortable.exe -safe-mode". There you should be able to delete the unwanted extension/plugin.

I hope this works as I never had to try it myself Smile

Not seen manually

I don't even see it by manually looking for it, nor doing a search on the drive for "stream" or "meta", will safe mode allow to me see things I can't now ? ( a few hours later now) I noticed that the exact same plugin is in my portable and my local install, so I was looking through the local installs folders located at, C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\2kh85rpy.default and came across this file called pluginreg.dat opened it in word and searched for stream and found a few lines that say the following which I will paste, but I only copied from the version number down, not what is above or below it. 3.0.15.12|$
1074046165359|1|21|$
MetaStream 3 Plugin r4|$
MetaStream 3 Plugin|$
1
0|application/x-mtx|MetaStream Plugin File|mtx|$ , have not checked any other files in there. Oh, while in the addons manager on the disabled metasteam3 plugin there is a link that says more info that takes you to the blocklist page but nothing on that page that I can find about this plugin. Weird.

plugin

Firefox ( no matter if run locally or portable) checks for plugins installed locally. so sometimes you see plugins yo dont want to use but there is nothing you can do about that other than removing it from the machine.

Correct

Hi simeon, that's correct, and if it "was" on a blocklist, even though I can't find it on the list and there is no way to remove, or use it in anyway because Firefox has blocked it, I apparently don't need or want it, how can I remove it locally ? can't even find much relevant to except the text in that darn file. And it is grayed out and has a red exclamation on it in the addons..

seems one of the unwanted

plugins, but it looks as this is a version, which is not compatible with your version of FF. I am not sure, but I have read somewhere, that this plugin will be generally disabled in FF4, but this can change.

So far, you can uninstall Viewpoint Media Player through Add/Remove programs and this will also remove the plugin.

Apparently, there were some security issues with this software, so it was locked out by the FF devs.

What is it

Viewpoint is the only thing that does come close to the name metastream when I search my computer, it's weird it isn't on the blocklist, so what is it ? what is it used for , by who ?

sometimes, someone

came to a page, and there it said you need some extra thing to view it properly, click here... and so you have it here.

Viewpoint was some kind of player earlier, something like flash or so, have no clue if it still exist in fact, have just looked at their website, it looks deserted for long time.
Try somehow uninstall all in connection with the viewpoint player, this should help you to get rid of the plugin as well.

hw to uninstall from their website:

Small problem hopefully

I don't see it under add/remove programs, BUT, I searched for it and it is there looks like a full install in the programs directory, and other places, not in my start menu, here's why i think why, I got this computer from a friend who used it for a business at one point I think, it's Windows XP Pro, when Windows starts there is no welcome screen or logon or anything, I am logged on with full admin rights, I notice there are a few different users, I went to users I can add or whatever I need to do but, the way it is setup I think it is telling me this is setup as a network domain instead of a single computer I guess, and I have no idea how to find it or change it, it says that if it's a network domain you will not have the welcome screen or logon, but there was a place in users to put a check mark to require a user name and password (not one or the other, just both) and I think that would at least show the logon screen, thing is I am a bit afraid to try that and not be able to log back on as this current user, in order to add a user or change anything about any users I have to put that check mark in there, then uncheck it then apply changes. Why he or they ever made this user not have all the same programs in the start menu and add/remove is beyond me. I did how ever create a new user with full admin rights and after I unchecked that box it disappeared like a bug or something, it's weird, so again I am sort of afraid to even reboot Blum but if it goes to a logon at least I have the user I made (I hope) and I hope it works. Not real sure what to do ):

Take it easy

I don't exactly know, how your settings are configured. A screenshot or a description of the dialog box might help a lot...
Normally that is totally harmless as long as you remember your password/username (and have admin rights for sure). Wink

btw, paragraphs were a good invention.

Yeah would be nice

I believe when I tried to that to make things clearer and easier to read and differentiate John T Haller told me don't do that the forums will do it for me or something to that effect, so I don't even bother using my enter key or any thing other than commas and periods and spaces and such...Maybe tab ?...):

I think what John was

I think what John was referring to was using Bold, and Italics, and the like. That doesn't mean you shouldn't still use proper punctuation and use paragraphs.

change back to workgroup

from the domain set up. For this take some book on windows, it takes few small steps to do so. Settings are under system, but part also under computer administration and policies etc.

Seytem, computername, chnage... make it back to name and workgroup instead of domain.
Then under computer administration, local policies, you can look if there are some policies remaining which you do not want that way.

If this computer was in company network before, then domain setup is common. The local stored profile is just some kind of generic in this case and on logon, the profile of that particular user is downloaded from the company server. This is why menus, desktop settings and similar are not properly configured, those thigs are part of the user profile siting probably still somewhere on the server of that company where the thing was used before.

you can check if there is an uninstaller in the folder with that program, if not use some unistall app for that, there is one published recently here.
