I've downloaded the zip file to my Kingston 2gig flash drive into a Download folder I created on the drive. I used WinZip to extract files into OpenOffice folder I created. The program doesn't show up on the Kingston menu. Clicking on the OpenOffice.exe files brings up a gray window.
Then I downloaded the zip file unto my computer desktop. I used Winzip to extract the program into a new folder I created in under Kingston's Document folder. Same result. Shouldn't the program be visible on the Kingston menu rather than me having to Explore to an exe file. And why is the opening window grey with a toolbar?

Can't Start Program ...
The current version, you just unzip the whole thing (using a zip program that can handle preservation of directory structures) and run PortableOpenOffice.exe. That's all there is to it. No idea what you mean by a Kingston menu.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
When I click on PortableOpenOffice.exe, a window comes up that says OpenOffice.org across the top, a couple of icons in the toolbar and a large grey window underneath. That can't be the way the program looks when it opens, can it.
And the Kingston menu is a menu of programs that appear when you right-click the icon in the systray. Perhaps it only shows programs from the Kingston company. Kingston is the maker of the flash-drive.
It's usually a font issue that causes this. Namely, that you don't have Tahoma on your system. Try the pre-release of OpenOffice.org Portable 2.0.3 to be sure. You can find it in the Beta Forum.

OK,downloaded 2.0.3 and the PortableOpenOffice.exe still opens with a grey window. I have Tahoma on my system (my favorite font). When I double-click the individual program .exe files, they open, including the Writing program with Tahoma fonts. Sorry, this is very puzzling and frustrating I can't open the main program. Anything else. Virus programs, maybe?
Give me the full rundown. What OS? What exact location/directory are you installing it to? Any INI options? Any other programs running?

OS is Window XP Pro (desktop computer) or HOME (laptop)with all security packs installed. Don't know what ini means. I have two OpenOffice installed now on the main tree. Directory on my Kingston U3 is OpenOffice (holding the first installation) and OpenOffice Portable (holding the Beta 2.0.3 that you asked me to download).
Again, the separate .exe files will open it's separate program, but the main window .exe presents a gray window with a working toolbar.
Programs running are Norton SystemsWorks (System Doctor running), Norton Internet Security (with Anti-Virus), QuickNotes (Post-Its - type program), AdAware (spy-stopping program, but even when I turn it off, the grey window is the same). That's it.
