7-Zip: questions from a n00bguy

hi guys,

i'm new with this portable apps stuff.

i just want to ask a few things.

how can i associate file types with 7zipportable, i tried it in the options menu but it won't. i've tried associating file types with another portable app from winpenpack, specifically, the x-mpchc, it just does it fine. but with 7zipportable it won't.

last, can we integrate 7zipportable to the shell context menu?

thank you.

Not portable

None of that is portable. If you do it in any of these, it removes the portability. If you want them, you should be using 7-Zip proper, not 7-Zip Portable.

Where are you running 7-Zip from?

That is the key question.

If from a USB drive, then it wouldn't be a good idea to do any of the things IMO...

If you are running it from the hard drive, like I do, then there are ways to make it work better.

1. Associate filetypes.
-Use the "Open With" context menu option and choose 7-ZipPortable.exe. This will send all of that filetype to 7-zip.

2. Context menu.
-Generally, PortableApps wont be able to add entries to the explorer context menu since this causes issues when you want to remove the drive. This is because when you want to remove the context menu entry (when you want to remove the drive) the only way is to restart explorer.
-You can however create a shortcut and add it to the SendTo menu.
--Create a shortcut to 7-ZipPortable.exe.
--Open explorer - type shell:sendto into the address bar
--copy and paste the shorcut into that folder.
--This will allow sending of files to 7-Zip.

The sendto entry is what I do.

BUT like I said above, if you are running it from a USB stick it could be problematic.
