chrome portable won't run

I just installed GoogleChrome 11.0.696.71 Portable but it won't run (Windows XP SP3). After clicking the .exe file, hourglass spins a couple of seconds, but nothing happens.

I have Firefox and Opera portable installed which work fine. What's wrong with Chrome portable?

answering my own question...

After some more searching, I found the cause...

The reason is that GoogleChrome portable won't run from the c:\Program Files folder on Windows XP Home SP3. It worked fine after I moved it to a different location such as c:\PortableApps.

There are two related threads on this subject which should be cross-referenced (hereby):
https://portableapps.com/node/21171
https://portableapps.com/node/28038

Also there really needs to be some kind of warning up-front to those who are downloading the GoogleChrome portable browser. Like me they'll probably install it in the Program Files folder out of long habit, but it won't run/start from there. Sad

Other portable apps I've installed work fine in the c:\Program Files folder, but not this one!

Unsupported

Running any portable apps from the Program Files directory has always been unsupported. Don't do it for any of them. Program Files is for locally-installed normal apps only. Portable Apps belong in a PortableApps directory. In Windows Vista/7, none of them will work at all due to permissions settings. In Windows XP, many of them will work, but several will fail (Google Chrome, Sumatra PDF, etc).

At some point, we'll set the PA.c Installer to simply refuse to install to Program Files to avoid this occurring. Even if it works on Windows XP, when you eventually upgrade your operating system, all your portable apps in Program Files will stop working.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
