Firefox Portable has suddenly started crashing every few minutes

Hi,

I've used Firefox portable for a long time on my main PC. I upgraded to 4.0 a couple of months ago if I remember rightly, then a few weeks ago I went to 5.0 but also kept an installation of 4.0 available.

Suddenly its started crashing every few minutes and is essentially unusable (I'm using Chrome to type this!). This happens with both the 4.0 and the 5.0 instances, and also with a brand-new instance of 5.0 that I downloaded and installed. I've brought all Plugins up to date.

It also crashes when running in Safe Mode, and of course the clean 5.0 doesn't have any add-ons in any case.

The crash is a Windows one, Windows just puts up the "Firefox has stopped working" box and shuts it down, so its not recorded as a Mozilla crash.

Here's and example from the Windows error log ..

Faulting application name: firefox.exe, version: 5.0.0.4183, time stamp: 0x4df95302
Faulting module name: unknown, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000

Faulting process id: 0xf6c
Faulting application start time: 0x01cc3fa823591724
Faulting application path: D:\Programs\FirefoxPortable5\App\firefox\firefox.exe
Faulting module path: unknown

Any ideas?

The only recent changes on the PC were to delete and recreate my Outlook profile, and to upgrade the messaging client from OCSr2 to Lync.

Thanks, Tony S

Virus?

I had a friend who had a virus that exhibited similar behavior on his computer. Try running a virus scan and see what pops up.

Try this. While Firefox

Try this. While Firefox Portable is not running, rename your Data folder in FirefoxPortable5 to Data2 and then start FirefoxPortable.exe

Renaming Data doesn't work, but Aurora does

Thanks, that was a quick easy test, but unfortunately didn't help. It only lasted a couple of minutes before blowing me out again.

Yesterday I tried installing Aurora, as described in the first reply to "Testing Firefox 7 "Aurora" in portable mode". It's been working ever since, in fact I'm using it to post this response. It even works with the two must-have extensions IE Tab and Adblock Plus.

Just tried the Portable FF

Just tried the Portable FF 6.0 Beta. No joy, that crashes as well after a minute or so.

I ran two virus scans yesterday, Sophos and Macafee "Stinger", both came up clean.
