Minecraft Portable [Development Release]

Application: Minecraft
Category: Games
Description: "Minecraft is a sandbox building indie video game written in Java originally by Swedish creator Markus "Notch" Persson"

Details:
Minecraft is a game that is focused on creativity and building, allowing players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D world. The game has two variants – free Classic and paid Beta – where Classic is focused entirely on construction with unlimited material supply, whereas Beta requires players to acquire resources themselves, and contains mobs, player health, and additional features and items.

App:
This is an alternate revision to the release here:
https://portableapps.com/node/25222.

This version is simpler, does not include server files, allows MineCraft's launcher to handle updating, and includes an alternate launcher for offline game play, but doesn't currently work with JavaPortable.

Works completely portable, and should be compatible with all newer releases, as the launchers automatically update the content files.

Download Minecraft Portable [Development Release] Here [0.6MB Download / 1.9MB Installed]

Note: This release fully complies with Minecraft's Term's Of Use.

If you have any issues running Minecraft Portable, mention them here.

Being that the files run from

Being that the files run from your USB, you may get a slight bit of initial lag when starting gameplay while the files load into memory.

This is entirely conditional, and shouldn't happen with faster USB drives.

And as the inspiration for this came from my need for MineCraft at work, I entirely understand Smile

Thanks for commenting.
I'm glad you enjoy it.

How to point Minecraft too Java Portable ?

I would like to know if anyone has run Mincraft with JPortable? If so how is this done.

When I start Minecraft on a Java-less PC I get warning to edit a path too point Minecraft toward java file.

I'll update post with warning text later.

You can use a batch file to

You can use a batch file to define the PortableJava folder.

I'll be sure to include that in the next update.

Use PAL

If you were using the PortableApps.com Launcher, as you should be, it wouldn't be a problem. It would work with jPortable immediately (as well as working with a local installation).

Untrue. The PortableApps

Untrue.

The PortableApps launcher opens MineCraft's launcher with the arguments needed to run in PortableApps format.

The MineCraft launcher, however, is what searches for the Java installation.

I could have the PortableApps launcher open the MineCraft jar directly, but that would defeat the MineCraft launcher's updating feature.

This can also be resolved through the launcher, but then the data stored by MineCraft is no longer in PortableApps format, which is the issue I wanted to fix in the aforementioned link.

For Official

For the official release, we will probably use the Minecraft JAR anyway as the other Minecraft Portable launcher does. That way it can be properly directed to jPortable (the official way to run Java apps portably) and the Minecraft Portable package can just be updated by the platform as with all other apps.

Any thoughts on how to use

Any thoughts on how to use the mentioned method while keeping PortableApps directory format?

That seems to be the main issue currently.

EDIT: Actually, I'm gonna spend some more time on this and see if I can't come up with a viable solution.

Old Launcher

How was the old launcher not PAF compliant? I was under the impression that it was.

PAF compliant on my home

PAF compliant on my home computer, but my restricted work computer disallowed its compliance.

To me, this defeated the purpose of the App's portability, so I set the PA launcher to use the MineCraft launcher instead, handling only the data redirects, which seems to work fine.

I'm testing things out currently. Might be able to find the issue fairly soon.

How so?

"disallowed its compliance" is really vague. What specifically went wrong?

The system's %appdata%

The system's %appdata% variable was used instead of being redirected to the PA defined directory, which removed all practicality of the App.

thanks for your effort

...but I can't get it to work with jPortable installed only.
Therefore no java install on the machine itself, just the portable solution that won't make it for me (popping up IE to have me download java from sun).
Regarding that, I'm wondering about the hidden folders "Microsoft->Windows->IEDownloadHistory->index.dat" being created in the Data folder.

If you want something that

If you want something that works with JavaPortable, try using the release here:
https://portableapps.com/node/25222

My release doesn't work with JavaPortable atm, but does have a smaller footprint, and includes an offline launcher.

And being that the app redirects the %appdata% variable to the Data directory, any child processes of the launcher will send data there.

As well, being as it currently seems that only my work computer has issues with the aforementioned release, I may simply discontinue this one, as the other works with JavaPortable, which is preferred.

Crash error and question

Hey guys, I'm pretty new to all this; just downloaded this last week after looking for a better way to have multiple Minecraft installations for different sets of mods (or testing). I've only downloaded this version because it was marked "Development Release," but I', having the occasional problem. I also have a question.

First, the problem is that every other time (or seemingly at random) that I try to launch Minecraft via MinecraftPortable.exe, after logging in, the launcher window blanks out to white and shows black text which reads "missingtex"... Here's a screenshot:

http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/7774/missingtex.jpg

I also saved the crash report/error log, and it looks like the problem has something to do with the "javax.imageio.IIOException: Can't create cache file!" error... Here's a pastebin of the complete log:

http://pastebin.com/NB5XFhXX

I don't ALWAYS get this error... It seems like about half of the time, it works. (But on a side note, I've never been able to launch using the "MinecraftPortable(Unlicensed).exe" file... When I try launching with that file, I get this JVM error popup: "Could not find the main class: net.minecraft.Launcher.Frame. Program will now exit."

And yes, I'm using a legit copy. Sometimes I can launch the game with the regular .exe just fine, but the rest of the time that "missingtex" crash happens. I hope this info can help you guys debug this problem, if this project is still being worked on.

Also, I figured out how to create multiple "portable installations" by simply copying the entire root folder and changing the install path data in one of those .ini files (I forget which one), but I was wondering if there's also a way to launch the game with a few custom JVM commands, like increasing the memory via the "-Xmx2048M" command, or changing the garbage collection method via the "-Xincgc" command...

Since you guys redirect the launcher to use a custom directory, I wouldn't even know how to begin writing a custom /bat file that I can use to enter my own custom tweaks. Or can options like these be placed in one of the .ini files?

Anyway, thanks for the work you guys have put into this so far. Cheers!

This is the report I get when launching the licensed version. I never get this on the unlicensed one; in fact, the unlicensed version works fine. Maybe it's DRM in action? Sad

EDIT: I have jPortable and Java on my PC, if it helps.
