Bryce 5 Free

I've downloaded a few things from portableapps so I thought I'd share this little gem with everyone here. Currently, http://www.daz3d.com/program/bryce/bryce5free.php is giving away their 3d animation program, Bryce 5, until September 13th. I was pleasantly surprised to find out it's portable right from the start! There's a small registration process, but it was painless!

Yup

Quite right, oyster... someone attempting to hide a referal URL for a commercial program.

They're now banned and I reported the link to the publishers of Bryce3d.

Why?

Hi John,

First off thanks for your work with Portable apps love the site and I'm totaly hooked on them! And I'm not trying to be a forum flamer/troll here as I normaly just keep quite and go about minding my own business. But I seen this post and can't help but wonder why he was banned and reported? I tried to find the forum regs but I couldn't find them (flame suit on :-). But heres my questions if you don't mind.

1. I don't know which link he posted but I do know for a fact that last week (and the week before) the company that makes Bryce 5.0 did have a free promotion for the software Along with another promotion where you signed up on another one of their websites you could buy Byrce 5.5 for $20.00 from them (which I did - and that offer wasn't posted here). This was a legit offer from the company that makes it and was not in anyway shape or form of getting illegal software/warez. Also they where not the only 3D software company that was giving away free full/retail software during the same time (Poser 5.0 if you wanted to know).

2. This was posted in the General Discussion area. So it wasn't off topic Just some trying to let others know about a free legit offer from a software company. Not some company trying to sell something.

If I would of seen this post I would of thanked the person who posted this, as it was a really nice gesture on the part of the companys to give their software away for free for a period of time and someone thinking that others might enjoy the software. But I knew about the offers before hand from the companies directly. I can also (if needed) forward the Email that the companies themselves have sent out (or even point you to their forums that talk about these offers. I'm not trying to be a pain in the butt, but I just don't like seeing someone accused of doing something illegal when they just where trying to be nice and give a heads up to other people that they have a common interest in. Now if he was banned for some other reason that I didn't touch on and I'm being totaly clueless than my apologies in advance about it.

EFudd

P.S. Ok I just happend to see that it might have been better to post this in the Off-topic area but still not enough imo to warrant a ban.

Hmph...

You guys are lame! There's no one trying to hide anything here! TJ2010 was trying to share what he found! If you missed their free promotion, that's your fault. I took advantage of it and now I'm happily running Bryce 3d on my thumb drive. Too bad, so sad!

Misunderstanding

As it turns out, it was a misunderstanding based on a series of odd coincidences. The original URL posted was as follows:

http://www.daz3d.com/program/bryce/bryce5free.php?trid=363237204

As you can see, it has a tracking ID embedded within it. These are used to track referals so that people can get credit for them (money, credits, etc). Any type of referal links are banned here as part of the self-promotion rules within the forum guidelines.

I contacted Bryce to let them know they had someone in their referal program spamming. They responded that it appeared that we "had an ignorant user on your hands, and not a malicious one". The referal ID is from a banner add used over a year ago. It's not used by their current referal program. And they couldn't figure out how a user could have gotten that URL today.

So, I have re-actived TJ2010's account and offer my apologies for the misunderstanding. In the future, I would suggest removing referal IDs from links posted within online forums to avoid this happening again. (Every community forum I know of prohibits referal-tracking links.)

Regards,
John

Thanks

As I said I didn't see the actual URL that was posted and I can totally understand any issues with referal ID's in links. Thanks for the clarification and kudo's to how you handled it...
And for the record, I'm not the original poster nor do I know him/her. Have a good one!
