I've been using the Portable Apps version of Firefox for a couple of years, and it works great for me. The version I'm using, according to the About item on the Help menu, is 3.6.13, which I assume corresponds with the same native Mozilla version.
I thought it was time to upgrade to version 4, so I came here expecting to find a version 4 of the Portable App. Instead, the current version here is 6.0.2. WTF?
I click on "Other Versions," and the next lowest version number is 3.6.22.
I go to the version history to try to find out what's what, it was last updated in 2007, so no help there.
I go to the FAQ, and can find nothing about which native version this corresponds to.
Isn't that kind of important information for someone wanting to try the Portable Apps version?
Can someone tell me which version of Firefox the portable version is based on, and why the version numbers jumped from 3.x to 6.x?
Thank you.
Firefox changed the way it does versions. So while 3.6.y followed 3.6.x, version 4 was followed by 5 and then 6. As such, version 4 and 5 are now unsupported and insecure and should definitely not be used. The longer you wait to upgrade, the more difficult upgrading will become. Mozilla will no longer be maintaining old versions, much the way Google Chrome and Opera don't either. 3.6.x will be killed off shortly now (it's been over 3 months and Mozilla says it will be supported "for a short time" rather than the old 6 month timeframe).

Oh. Well, that's embarrassing. I guess I avoided upgrading longer than I thought.
Still don't understand why the version history was last updated four years ago, but thanks for the info on the current numbers.
We stopped editing version histories a long time ago. Just extra effort for no real payout. We'll remove them shortly.
