I encountered the following annoying behavior:
It is not possible to drag a file from Windows Explorer to an app window started through the PA-Platform (as indicated by the mouse cursor). Example: Explorer to VLC. However, the same is possible once the app is not started through the platform but through the Explorer. It is also possible to drag a file from a file manager that was launched from the platform (like FreeCommander Portable) to the window of another program that was launched from the platform. But it is not possible to drag from the same FreeCommander window to a program not launched by the platform.
I have the platform installed on an external drive connected to Win 7 Home Premium SP 1 (64bit).
Any ideas for solving that issue?
Thanks.
I can drag files to Notepad++ Portable. Can you reproduce it with any other app?
Previously known as kAlug.
Thanks for the reply.
Notepad++ Portable shows the same behaviour as the other apps: no drag & drop
Both Notepad++ Portable and VLC Portable work when dragging and dropping files for me from Windows Explorer to them on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I've never seen the behavior you are describing for any portable app on any operating system, so there may be something different about your specific computer or configuration. Do you have any extra security software that could cause it? Are you using the standard Windows Explorer? What type of account are you logged in with?

Both programs receive dragged files when not started through the platform. And I use the standard Windows Explorer. It seems that on my system only files can be dragged to other apps, if all the apps run under the same parent process. So, I cannot drag "across" process trees.
No special security: just Avira, Windows Firewall and Windows Defender. I am logged in as administrator.
It would kinda seem that way, but why? Something would have to be a bit messed up for that to happen. It doesn't seem to happen on my system with Explorer set to use separate processes or not. I'd research further into your drag and drop issues on your PC to see if something else is afoot. A quick search yielded some bad registry entries and malware that can cause it.

Ok, thanks folks! I have solved the problem and am able to reproduce it:
I started the Platform via a shortcut on the Windows desktop and set the shortcut to run as an administrator. I also have the Windows UAC activated. Both settings together cause the described issue. Disabling either "run as administrator" or the Windows UAC (or both) solves the problem.
Maybe this will help others who run into the same problem.
Thanks again for the help!
Thank you!
I never put two and two together but a few weeks ago I started running PortableApps as administrator and, without realizing the correlation, also lost the ability to drag+drop. This was driving me nuts and I did all sorts of things like reinstalling Chrome, modifying flags, optimizing my flash drive, etc, etc, etc...
Turns out it was the extra right click I was using to open PortableApps.
Thanks again. It's such a relief to have this fixed.

I am on a PC running XP SP3.
I just started VLC media player from the PortableApps menu. I next started Windows explorer. I selected a .wma file and dragged it to VLC. Almost immediately, the album cover appeared and the music began flowing out of the speakers. All VLC functions worked fine.
I next tried it on my wife's laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit and again Drag&Drop worked as expected.
I think it must be something within your environment that is causing the drag&drop not to function as expected.

That's by design for security reasons and applies to all apps when there is a different in context like that.
