What to do next?

After downloading the Patform, and updating it, does it show the programs automatically or what? Why do I have an emply portableapps desktop? How do I get it working?

You need to actually get the apps

The platform you installed is just the platform.
You need to install the apps of your choice. Click on Manage Apps and select Get More Apps. You will get a dialog box that allows you to select apps to automatically download and install. It may take a while, especially if you choose large apps.
Since there are a lot of apps, and some have the same functions as others, most people only choose some of the apps. If you are new to PortableApps, I suggest only installing the ones you really need at first - you can always add more later!
