it is an live installer, so you need to download the previous version from sun/oracle first.
But I have so far never met any problems when java was updated.
What programs are not compatible? How do you start them?

The previous version of Java includes serious security holes that an attacker can use from portable Firefox, Opera, Chrome, etc to gain access to your machine and portable device. Any app that is not compliant with the latest Java is likely a dead app and should no longer be used.
