bulk app installs

I don't know if the ability to select apps for download from within the Portable Apps platform is new or not, but I just found it and think it's great!

I was starting with a fresh install of the latest platform which doesn't come with any apps other than the music offering. So when I looked at it and found that I could just check the apps I wanted and then let the platform download and install them from one operation, I was very pleased.

But......no "but" is not a good word, it infers that there is a problem that needs to be fixed. I just want to make a suggestion and see if others agree it would be a good idea. It probably wouldn't take much work on the platform itself, but it would require cooperation from all the app developers.

Basically it's this......provide two user selectable options, that the apps installation process could query to avoid having to stop and request user confirmation. One would be simply the acceptance of the terms and conditions. If the user could specify this once before starting a bulk download it would simplify and speed things up for him immensely. The second would be a selection of a desired language. This wouldn't some into play as much, but since it's almost certain that a user won't want to choose a different language for different programs.

Both of these would permit an unattended install and setup of a new device.

Thanks.......

Each app will only ever need

Each app will only ever need to have the license agreement accepted the first time you download it (and this usually only on freeware, not on open source apps). On subsequent updates you will never have to accept the license for the same apps, only for new apps.

And as each freeware app could potentially have a different agreement, you can't legally ask a user to make a blanket agreement to all of them without displaying them all.

Thanks for response....

That clarifies the part about not needing to respond to an agreement request on subsequent updates.

And, as I said, the language part probably doesn't come into play very often.

But for initial installs, it still would have been nice, but probably not worth the effort of trying to have all developers commit to checking any such switches.

Thanks again...

In Progress

We have something that will be alleviating the agreement issue in development.

Language selection many apps will auto-select language based on the platform. Some won't. It's not a requirement for apps in PA.c Format, but it is encouraged. It will be *highly* encouraged soon Smile

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
