I've had to reinstall Windows due to a corrupted drive and I've just tried to install Skype 4.2.0.187 (which I've continued to use as I don't like version 5x) but I can't get it to work.
I get an error message like: The Installer can't download Skype.
I'm just wondering if this may mean that my particular version has been removed from the Skype server and so I may have had it.
Can anyone enlighten me please?

Skype 4.2.x is long-dead, unsupported and has security issues. So, likely, Skype no longer has it on their server (nor should they). Since it's no longer there, Skype Portable can't download it.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
