Updater issue

I have a problem. I cannot update my applications. The update search for updates and put the infos about actual new versions into .\Data\Update.ini, but nothing more - always it says that all aplications are at highest level-new, altough the are very old.
Platform is 10.0.1 on XP

Can't Reproduce

Can't reproduce this issue at all. Are you sure you have the platform installed to X:\ root directory and all your apps in subdirectories off X:\PortableApps?

Directory Names

And you have the apps installed to their standard directories like X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable, correct? Can you add apps via the App Directory in the Platform?

hmm

I have all aplications installed in directories without portable in the name, e. g. X:\PortableApps\Firefox and not X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable

Today I used again PortableApps and Java was upadted to 6.3.1.1, but nothing more, no one application - miracle.

P.S.: I renamed directory at one application with portable in name and it is now possible to update.
Is THIS the solution? MUST I install all applications XS in directories with XSportable?
Then is the choice where I can install the application a mistake - it shoud give only a choice for disk and not directory too.

standard will update

but the choice of directory is right, since I have for example more then one version of some programs and deliberately have some older versions and I do not want them to be updated as otherwise there is no point of keeping older versions. I may need them for compatibility reasons etc.

The current version is then in the standard folder and will be updated.

The one in the non-standard folder will not be updated automatically, but can be when installed over it and manually pointed to that location.

So by this mechanism, the versions in non standard folders are kind of protected.
Therefore this is a feature not a bug!

And try to imagine: how should the updater know where and what you want to be updated if it is kept in some own defined folders? How can the updater find all folders in the world where some potential update might be possible. After all, there is no registry entries with portable apps allowing updaters to find their target in a simple way.

You should never change the directory name

Not everyone uses the platform, so it's necessary to allow them to change the path if they so choose. In my experience, it's never been a great idea to change the install folder name of any app, whether portable or not.
If you use the platform, then you should install apps in one of two ways. You can download the installer, and then choose Apps->Install a New App. That will automatically install the app in the correct directory of the platform fine. Or you can use Apps->Get More Apps... which takes you to the Portable App Directory where you can download apps you don't have.

If you try to install an app by double-clicking on a paf.exe file, you do have to make sure the path is correct, especially if you have your portable apps on a different drive than the paf.exe.

The answer to your question is Yes, you must install the apps using their correct default folder names. The updater specifically uses these folder names to locate apps that need updating, so if you alter these folder names, the updater can't find them.

EDIT: If you don't want to see the word Portable in the app names in the platform, there is an option in Options to hide that.

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.

Thanks

Thanks you all for answering.

I thought that portableapps search for executables in first level directory above and that it is useless to have name portable in each level of directory tree.
For the second the update procedure is not automatic - you have the choice if you update the application or not. I have of course different versions of applications too and I think that portableapps search for apps only in one level of directory (the first level above portableapps).

Your answers solved my problem, thanks.

P.S.: I know the option with showing the portable in application name or not (this option is only for app names and it show portable in name of application even if the application is not in directory with the portable in name).
