Updating FireFox Portable

I thinking of deploying Firefox Portable on desktops since it is a flat folder install. The beauty of this is I just need to copy the folder and it's fully functional. No install / uninstall commands.

My Question is how can I update this in the future? Can I run the command:

"\\...FirefoxPortable_9.0.1_English.paf.exe" /s (example)

and update Firefox portable without any fuss?

Thanks

Just install a new version

Just install a new version straight over the existing version.

The installer will only update the app itself, and won't overwrite your user data or settings.

INstall overtop

All you need to do is install any newer version in the same location as you originally install to.

IE: X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable is your original install location, you would run the installer for the update to that location as well.

Alternatively, you can install the Platform, install Firefox, Portable Edition to it, and let the platform inform you when you need to update. It'll pop up a list of apps needing updates, and when you select them, they'll be installed automatically for you, no fuss.

Update Portable FF

Thanks to all

I have FF Portable installed at C:\Firefox\...

Copy an update like "FirefoxPortable_X.X.X_English.paf.exe" to the same folder.

Then run "C:\FireFox\FirefoxPortable_X.X.X_English.paf.exe" /s

and I'm done

Thanks for confirming

Not Quite

/s is not supported by the installers. Silent updates do work in conjunction with the PortableApps.com Platform's updater.

Platform

Use it in conjunction with the platform and it will notify you when it is out of date and update it with just a click.

I thought you could update

I thought you could update Firefox Portable through the internal editor under Help. I was surprised it seemed to work. I thought that would only work for non-portable versions. Even Thunderbird worked.

The problem with doing that

The problem with doing that is that you are updating the base app only, the additional files needed by the platform are not updated by internal updaters.

Doing this you may end up with some issues of portability (the base app may change the way it handles files, folders or registry entries, but the portable launcher hasn't been updated to accommodate this), plus the platform will still tell you that you have the older version installed.

You are always best to use the PortableApps platform or a paf.exe from this site to update your apps.
