Try DSL (Damn Small Linux) from http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/ . It has been reported to run from within Windows using QEMU. Haven't tried it myself, but have used earlier versions of DSL from CD. Don't like the window manager, so I have been using Puppy http://www.puppyos.com/ from CD.

thanks for that,
i have been doing a bit more research, do i need to install a virtual disk and then run the iso through that? can i do that?

qemu lets you run it as if it is a normal program - try downloading the embedded version on their site for windows and just run it.
