Address Book Link / Stand Alone

Well I have 2 things here. (1) I want and was searching for a standalone address book or contacts, with all the features, email addresses, phone numbers, birthdates, mailing Address and such, still want one and found a post a long time ago with a few others that do also. Something small and simple like Pnotes or stickies and such. (2) It seems it is waste of a "getapps" link, because in the Office Section is, Mozilla Thunderbird, Portable Edition (Address Book) - Email client's built-in address book with import/export functions. That leads to the full program, that is already listed in the Internet Section as, Mozilla Thunderbird, Portable Edition - the handy email client. Kind of misleading too. Maybe because it use to be available separately ? Still want a stand alone phone book, address book or some such thing.

what functions?

The question came up at work too taday, some people were missing the old windows addressbook in current OS.

The question is what should one be able to do with such database. Simple have a list of something, being able to search in it etc, well for that I have an xls sheet , it has all the basic function, but what else should it do? Be somehow automatically connected to something? Like outlook or something else? That will not do it by itself.

It seems that more functions are now in some kind of binary files, well protected against damage etc, while earlier all was done within kind of text based files.
Apparently we should get used to the fact that special binary and often proprietary formats will be present, as it gives more security to the data in it apprently. And as there is the tendency more and more data being on some kind of 'cloud' the privacy protection of such data should be better as well.

I agree with you, that having something generic, compatible with this and that would be useful solution for many people, we could bypass all that 'syching' of mail clients, smartphones, office and home computers etc.

Looks like this is not existing in this form, otherwise existence of all those special tools copying the data from one program to other will not be needed.

Basic to me

Would be a lot like a .txt or .doc with a little added I guess. Maybe, name, a place for an email address or 2 or 3 or maybe 1 and a big area for notes, a mailing address USPS, maybe a work address, and phone numbers of course, Birthdates, I guess you could have reminders but not essential for me, it does not have to be linked to an email client for me anyway, I can just remember or copy and paste, a few other options might be areas for online names, say skype name, or social media names or music site names. but not essential if we have a good notes and extras area. Maybe searchable but also not essential, maybe organized in some manor like alphabetically or by email. Like a little phone number address book we use to carry in our pocket or have lying around. Small, fast and easy like Pnotes.

so excel

or other office sheet might be just what you want.

I started to use something like that on my Psion computer (yes I am a gruftie) in the 90ties, as the export of such sheet did work on all computers then.

Basic sheet, no fancy functions, but one can add as many lines or cells or what ever and all is searchable and exportable and if arranged the proper way it can be imported to many other data base and mail clients etc.

Any office program can use it, the one on my old Psion as well as any current computer inclusive smart phone etc.

You can try to export abook from your mail client in form of csv and import it to office sheet and this will give you good base for it. From there on you can edit it and arrange all the way you want it.

Office

Is a bit to involved though, if we just want something with pre-defined areas yet very simple. Maybe a Calendar would or could have it combined, but I remember the FF/Thunderbird addon was done for or something and did not have an address book, or contacts. And Sunbird I think it is does not have an address book.

It is misleading, to be sure

The "Mozilla Thunderbird, Portable Edition (Address Book)" appears to only refer to adding a link in the menu to the address book that is inside the full Thunderbird. Perhaps it should be called "Mozilla Thunderbird, Portable Edition (Address Book LINK)".

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.

Nirsoft

I just dropped a suggestion to Nirsoft about a Thunderbird address book utility. Don't know if he'd be interested, but he'd be top on my list.

We probably shouldn't swamp him, but some additional requests might not hurt.

MyContacts Portable

Maybe you'd find this one useful:

MyContacts Portable 3.0.3

1. http://www.akraiss.de/mycontacts/uebersicht.htm#eng

2. https://portableapps.com/node/29039

I only played a little bit with this app, because of its GUI not suitable for my screen resolution, making hard to use it efficiently.
