If you're having troubles running Secret Maryo Chronicles on Windows, receiving an error message like "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem." while trying to starting Secret Maryo Chronicles, then download and install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86). This should fix the problem.
Text partially taken from here. I'm not that good at sounding professional.
I wanted to add something, but I wasn't sure where to do this (here or in the post above).
In appinfo.ini I wasn't sure about the [Version] block, can I just choose that as I want?
This is my first release, if there's something wrong/outdated/against the rules/unnecessary/.., let me know.
I didn't pay that much attention to the files in the Other directory. I updated the images and remove old files from the old launcher, but that's about it. If some file is missing, let me know
Yes, I set the working directory!
I have tested your SecretMaryoChroniclesPortable Development Test 1 (2012-02-17) package, ...
1) Directory left on c: drive
Inside Vista and Windows 7
C:\Users\ [Your user name] \AppData\Roaming\smc\cache\1024x768\pixmaps\maryo
2) Your downloadable file package have the word "English" and "1.0" inside, it's a multi-lingual game, not only English, and it's not v1.0 but v1.9. Please use instead = SecretMaryoChronicles_Portable_1.9_Development_Test_1.paf.exe
3) You include inside the package, the directory makefiles.
SecretMaryoChroniclesPortable\App\SecretMaryoChronicles\makefiles
That "makefiles" directory and sub-directorys is not needed to play he game.
1) That's strange, I added "Appdata=%APPDATA%\smc" to launcher.ini, I'll look into it and see if I can reproduce it.
edit: on my machine, the directory
C:\Users\ [Your user name] \AppData\Roaming\smc\
doesn't even exist anymore after closing the app, and so the subdirectories.
2) I wasn't sure what the version number should be (the version number of the dev test or the application one...). I updated it to 1.9 and changed English to Multilingual.
3) I removed the makefiles.
I'll upload when I'm ready...
Btw, 1 question about the filesize, should I add that when you run the app for the first time, the 127 MB from above changes into 138 MB? Or which one should I mention in the top post?
Yes, I set the working directory!
But as I recall from RedNotebook
AppData\Roaming\smc\cache\1024x768\pixmaps\maryo
would be
%LOCALAPPDATA%\smc
not
%APPDATA%\smc
“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.” Dr. Seuss
No, it's really %APPDATA%, when the game is opened, I see the smc folder inside %APPDATA% and not inside %LOCALAPPDATA%.
http://www.secretmaryo.org/wiki/index.php?title=SMC_FAQ#Q:_Where_are_my_...
%LOCALAPPDATA% is C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local
Why does Windows have to make these things so complicated, ain't just one folder enough?
Yes, I set the working directory!
You include inside the package, the directory src.
SecretMaryoChroniclesPortable\App\SecretMaryoChronicles\src
That "src" directory and sub-directorys is not needed to play the game.
Also
SecretMaryoChroniclesPortable\App\SecretMaryoChronicles\data\Makefile.am
"Makefile.am" is not needed to play the game.
ok, I'll remove them
Yes, I set the working directory!
Others not needed
SecretMaryoChroniclesPortable\App\SecretMaryoChronicles\Makefile.am
"Makefile.am" is not needed to play the game.
SecretMaryoChroniclesPortable\App\SecretMaryoChronicles\configure.ac
"configure.ac" is not needed to play the game.
SecretMaryoChroniclesPortable\App\SecretMaryoChronicles\autogen.sh
"autogen.sh" is not needed to play the game.
SecretMaryoChroniclesPortable\App\SecretMaryoChronicles\config.rpath
"config.rpath" is not needed to play the game.
Changed and uploaded.
Yes, I set the working directory!
>>> Bennieboj - February 17, 2012 - 11:28am = Changed and uploaded.
The download package have an error = Installer integrity check failed.

Yes, I set the working directory!
Now it's fixed Thanks.
Any time you make changes to the packaging, you need to update the dev test number as well. Refer to any of my dev test apps for examples of what I mean.
I didn't know it was this important, I'll edit the changelog.
Yes, I set the working directory!
So, I wanted to make a regshot to see if any files were left behind on my Win XP SP1 on VirtualBox. I found out that the application won't even start.
First I tried it when the files were on my USB. SecretMaryoChronicles.exe kept running, without starting the game. It did show the splash screen.
Then I thought it was because the file copying to %APPDATA%\smc took too long. This wasn't the case.
Then I copied the SMCPortable folder from the PortableApps directory to the desktop. Then, when starting the launcher, I got the warning that moving the files could break the game/launcher, which was normal.
It did break the launcher for some reason, it didn't even bother to copy the files to the appdata directory, it quit right away.
Then I tried to run the program without the launcher (so the normal exe), without having the cached files and my savefiles etc..
I got this error:
"[path]\Secret Maryo Chronicles\Secret Maryo Chronicles.exe
This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem."
The PALauncher didn't show this error for some reason.
This error has been mentioned here.
"Try re-downloading it and reinstalling it." was the advice from on the forums.
Anyone else who got this error?
EDIT: I installed the game on Win XP with the installer. This worked.
Then I uninstalled the game and tried running the portable version. This also worked. The only thing that the uninstalled didn't uninstall was "vcredist_x86.exe" (Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86)).
Is it a bad thing that a portable version of a game needs these libraries?
I know that almost every game needs these, but ain't there some kind of check that warns you that these libraries aint installed?
Yes, I set the working directory!
Wow, when the last time I was looking for it, it was not actual. I am happy about it.
I will watch on it in the next days and give my comment like bugs and so on.
I test it on an vista machine. No Bugs only the loading time was very long. But it worked perfect.
So I had may fun for any hours.
Are you talking about the loading time before the proces starts (no game window yet) or before the actual game starts (loading the images/sounds)?
About the loading time before the process starts:
The game caches images for each screen resolution you play on. So if you first play on a certain resolution and then change to another all the cached files from the previous resolution(s) will also get copied to you portable drive. It's best to stick to one resolution for all the pc's you play on. Why caching? Well the first time you started the game you probably saw "caching images", this is were the game started generating the images for you screen resolution. (Let's say the normal images are made for 640x480 and you screen resolution is 1,5 times bigger than that.) Then the game copies and modifies all the images it needs to display the game at your screen resolution. This normally happens only once, since I also backup the cached images. This should normally be like 20MB max I think.
Other than that, I noticed that the launcher takes a lot of time to end. (Way longer than some other launchers I made, with almost the same things to backup). I close the game, then it waits a long time to backup the data. (I already opened the appdata\smc folder to see what happens) I don't know hy this happens, but it works
Yes, I set the working directory!
I know that all.
I was only surprised about that it needs sooo long.
please make it offical. It is a beatiful game.
