Thunderbird and Firefox portable integrated in a collection of tools for pupils and teachers?

Hello ,

Our Institute for Quality Development in Schools (IQSH), Schleswig-Holstein plans to distribute a free portable software collection for teachers and pupils. This collection will include a lot of free/Open Source software which is pre-configured for our teachers and pupils in Northern Germany.

We ask you kindly if it’s ok to place the latest version of Thunderbird and Firefox (in a pre-configured form) in this package on our servers for public download. Of course we would place a link to your official homepage and a big “Thank You”.

Pre-configured just means: Germann Language and some bookmarks in Firefox.

Regards
Hartmut Karrasch

Yes

Under the GPL you are allowed to distribute it, even if John says no.

Changes

My bits are released under the GPL and may be distributed provided the launchers are unaltered codewise. You can also distribute altered versions, but you'd need to remove my trademarks.

You can drop an unaltered binary of German Firefox into the FirefoxPortable\App\Firefox directory, for instance, and distribute but you can't make any configuration changes (settings, add bookmarks, etc) and then release them publicly. This applies to the standard (non-portable) version of Firefox as well. Both of these statements go for Thunderbird as well. You can make changes such as this and release them internally (within your own organization, company, etc) since that isn't considered redistribution (as far as I know), you just can't make it available publicly.

If you want to make changes to TB of FF configuration, you'd need to use a build compiled without Mozilla's branding and call it a "Firefox Comunity Edition" package. I'm compiling a launcher for use with builds like this with the appropriate branding as well.

Don't you add your own bookmarks? Blum

Permission

I have permssion from Mozilla for the alterations I make, including the bookmarks, settings changes, inclusion of the the Enigmail/GPG extension, etc.

That's

what I thought.
Still, if it is only distributed around schools, it should be OK.
