Updating portable apps

Let's say I'm running Firefox Portable (I am) and it notifies me there's an update (it did). What should I do:
1 - Go ahead and do the update - will it update properly and still be portable?
2 - Wait for the new release from portableapps.com

The question doesn't apply just to Firefox, but any app (Thunderbird, OpenOffice.org, 7-Zip, Audacity, etc)

Sorry if this question has been addressed somewhere else or if this is the wrong way to ask, newbie

Multiple Options

You can go ahead and let FF or TB update themselves. No need to wait for the new package. I've preserved the ability for the Mozilla updater to work correctly in these packages. You just won't get any enhancements to the actual launcher bits when you do this.

When updating a PortableApps.com app... just extract a new copy over the old one (this applies to all apps after the name change to AppName Portable from Portable AppName). All your data will be preserved. You can even do this with Firefox Portable after you've already let the Firefox inside update itself to get the new launcher bits (for instance, FFP 1.5.0.7 features improved start times... it's in beta testing and coming out tomorrow).

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

The launchers (by

The launchers (by themselves) are available at the sourceforge page and usually John makes an announcement with a link for the new launcher.

Vintage!
