Confused about Foxit Portable

Hi all,
I have Foxit 5.1.0 installed on XP, SP3.

It works fine when I open a pdf.

But when I'm on a website, and try to open a pdf, first it asks me to run or install a plugin, and when I click ok, after that the screen is blank.
I try refreshing, but it stays blank.

What am I missing?

Thanks for any suggestions.

it needs a plugin

if it is a pdf and should be opened in the browser.
I have not heard of any plugin for foxit so far.

Plugin for opening pdf in the browser is from adobe and it will be installed together with the adobe reader.

Suggestion: pdf.js

If you're using Firefox, you could try using pdf.js; you can install it as an extension (I would take the development version over the "stable" version) and then it will render it in almost all cases where Adobe Reader would render it if it had been installed (only if the web developer was foolish and specified Adobe Reader specifically rather than leaving it to the browser will it not do it). Most PDF files will render just fine in it. I use it as my primary browser PDF renderer.

Otherwise you could use

Otherwise you could use Google Chrome, which has pdf support built in, or you could also use SRWare Iron, which has had the pdf support removed, but it can be re-implemented quite easily by copying the appropriate file from a Chrome install to the Iron directory.

Tell Firefox what to use

If you are using Firefox, and don't mind where the pdf opens (inside or outside the browser). You can tell Firefox to use Foxit. Because the default is Adobe. You can do this by : Tools > Options > Applications : once you are there find "Adobe Document" and change it to "always ask". You can change the other "Adobe" entries while you are there also.
Anyways, next time Firefox encounters a pdf it will ask you what you want to do with it. If you would rather Firefox not ask you every time, and you do the same thing every time. The 'ask' box has a 'Do this automatically for files like this from now on' check box' which records what action you choose , and does that next time instead of asking you.

or you could try Pdfdownload ( And it is FREE!)

http://www.pdfdownload.org/add_on.html

It is an extension that allows you to choose what happens when you open a pdf.

Confused about Foxit Portable

Hi Frankey,

Did you have any luck with this? I have the same issue. It's nothing to do with Adobe. It's Foxit not working properly. I contacted Foxit who said the latest official portable version was 4.7 and that this version 5.... is not supported. They recommended going back to their official version with the matching Firefox plugin which should work successfully. What's worked for you? Thanks.

Peace,

BG

not sure about confusion

I am not sure what are you trying to do, but if you are trying to use portable firefox and automatically open portable foxit when clicking on a pdf link, then this does not work that way. You have to make file association for the portable firefox between pdf and foxit portable to make pdf files open the portable foxit.

If you are talking about full local install of foxit, then this will have to produce a plugin for firefox and this has to be written in the registry of that computer. The firefox has to call some program automatically and communicate to that program. This could be achieved by a plugin supplied by the author of the foxit.

So are you trying something with portable versions or local installed versions?

Hi ottosykora,

I did make a file association with pdf and foxit. So when I see a pdf in my folder, it has the icon for Foxit, which tells me the association is there.

It is the portable version however, and it sounds like you're saying I need to do the full install for the web plugin to work.

Sounds reasonable, thanks, I'll try that. I'm using IE and you mention FF, but I suppose that doesn't matter, or does it? Is the web plugin only for FF?

Hi bqportable,

I did try the suggestion, but it's not very satisfying.... it doesn't work very well. I think I'm going back to Adobe. I know it's bloated and huge, but it works seamlessly.

When I try the suggested extension, I do get a prompt, asking if I want to download, open as html document, view, and I think one more option.

The html view is incomplete and messy, the open doesn't work at all, the download works but is timeconsuming to dl and then open and then delete it.

on edit: I reread your post and now I see you suggest going back to version 4.7.

Maybe I'll try that first. Did you try it?

Well I went to the full

Well I went to the full version of Foxit, 5.1.4, and everything works the way I want it.

Thanks all for the suggestions.
