Standby issues with the latest FF and TB versions

I've filed already a bug report over at bugzilla about it. But they don't deal with the portable versions. They also seem not to be able to reproduce the bug in the regular install versions.

Both, FF Portable and TB Portable, since v.11, stop responding to user input after wake up from standby. Mainly drop down menus either don't drop down, or one can't scroll through the menus. Restarting both applications solves the issue instantly.

The issue disappears completely when I install the old portable versions 10 over FF and TB. Could it have to do specifically with the portable versions (as the bug cannot be reproduced in the standard install versions)?

Here's a list of issues in FF and TB:

-in FF's search bar the drop down list with old search terms doesn't drop down.
-in the Bookmarks toolbar the folders won't open
-moving the mouse through an opened menu won't highlight the commands
-in FF's Options -> Advanced, the tabs (General/Network/Update/Encryption) can't be picked
-in FF's Options -> Applications, the applications don't get displayed
-SpeedDial's own group tabs won't work
-also other add-ons are having issues (mainly with something being blocked)

-in TB the mail alert doesn't pop up.
-in TB's composition window the address suggestions in the "To:" line don't open.

standby + app running off usb = bad

When standing by, some laptops will wake up the OS before reconnecting the usb drives, which winds up being the same as pulling a drive out and then reinserting while an app is running. This is bad and can break your apps. The workaround is to not do that.

Nope, it's no laptop, and no

Nope, it's no laptop, and no USB either. Right now, I simply assume that not too many people use standby in combination with a desktop computer and portable versions and that's why nobody notices the standby issues. If it's really only me that has the issue, I'll just have to wait and try any future versions and always go back to versions 10 if the issue persists. Well, I do hope some future versions will solve the issue, or I'll be stuck with versions 10 for the rest of my life. Wink

Desktop

If you're using it on a desktop, then our launcher doesn't do anything special in standby. And the only thing Firefox is doing differently while running is that it is pointing to a different profile directory. So, if there's a bug like you mention, it's more than likely in Firefox when used with the -profile switch on the command line. That is assuming that your hard drives come up properly and are accessible as soon as the OS and Firefox are looking for them.

Ah, well, maybe it's a bug

Ah, well, maybe it's a bug that takes some time to get accepted by the Mozilla folks. Actually, there are a few similar standby issues reported already over there (Status: unconfirmed), even with the install version. It's not such a big deal, as quickly restarting the two applications would solve the issue anyway, and I'm quite happy with versions 10 for the time being.

Upgrade

You should absolutely upgrade ASAP as 10.0 of both have major remote exploit security issues that allow any webpage to run any code locally (including malware, etc) just by you visiting a page. This isn't like older Firefox days where 10.0 would be supported for a while while everyone upgraded, this is now when each new release both adds features and fixes bugs. Unless you switch to Firefox ESR, that is, which is 10.0 but maintained. 10.0.4 is the current version. If you are using any 10.0 version less than that, you are extremely vulnerable.

Can I just simply install the

Can I just simply install the ESR version over the standard portable version and later perhaps install any future standard portable versions over the ESR version again, any way I want?

Yes

Yes you can. You'll need to rename the location it installs to (since it defaults to FirefoxPortableESR and not FirefoxPortable). Or, if you're using the platform, just rename the FirefoxPortable folder to FirefoxPortableESR and then check for updates. It will keep updating it to the 10.0 ESR version for you. When you're ready to switch back, just rename it back.

That's great! (I like it simple. ;)) I'll get the ESR versions then. Thanks for all your support, John!
