Description: Google Chrome Portable is a web browser that runs web pages and applications with lightning speed. It's designed to be simple and stylish. It's packaged as a portable app, so you can take your browsing experience with you.
This launcher is based on the official PA launcher present on the App Directory, but is modded to provide a better functionality to Slow Drives. To enable the Slow Drive Compatibility Mode, you need to add the entries RunLocally
and SlowDrive
in the INI...
Download Google Chrome Portable Launcher modded for Slow Drives v1.5 [1MB download / 1MB installed]
(MD5: B33B86AE2CDE367C41B2B12BB1AA7C00)
Note: I have no plans in releasing new versions. Tests confirms that using profiles bigger than 50MB makes the browser works faster but the actual starting and closing get severely delayed. Also, there isn't an easy way to port it to PAL. You're free to get the sources and continue developing the mod by yourself, just notify me before...
The download above provide only the changed files, just decompress over your portable Chrome directory, overwriting the existent files. This works with any channel (Stable, Beta, Dev, etc.)
Release Notes:
Changelog (no future versions planned)
- [1.5] Added a warning if SlowDrive are enabled but RunLocally not
- [1.4] Disables the mod and warn the user if 7za.exe can't be found
- [1.3] Speed up a little bit by updating the ZIP file instead of deleting and making a new file
- [1.2] Added proper check when both zipped and normal profile are present
- [1.1] Fixed command promt left open by changing to nsExec plugin
- [1.0] Initial release
Current issues
- More extensions, plugins and themes make the profile biger and the shutdown delayed (about 30 seconds with a profile of 100MB). Should add a progress bar somewhere
- If you have a lot of extensions and themes installed on Chrome Portable, the launcher itself will cause a delay of about 5-15 seconds when you launch Google Chrome Portable. This is an issue with the original source code of the launcher, and not the mod itself...
Don't forget to add these entries on "GoogleChromePortable.ini" file (otherwise the mod won't be activated):
When Google Chrome gets updated, the mod will be replaced by the official version... You can just copy the modded launcher to the folder of the new version. Also tested in Stable and Beta channels, working fine too.
Updated the entire topic using the forum guidelines. Also, the mod now check for missing dependencies and disable the mod if necessary...
In my MediaFire Account I can see the download count raising up but I have no replies to this topic Some feedback would be nice
You'll get that.
I have apps with over 800 downloads and only one or two comments.
Based on my numbers I generally expect a 0.25% or less comment rate (ie. every 800 downloads will get you around 2 comments).
Yes, this is expected... However, one week, 150+ downloads and ZERO comments is really boring. Sometimes it's satisfactory to see at least a "I'll test" or "Good app", etc
Not only has this mod fixed the speed issue (Win7 Pro, USB 2.0, Portable Apps on 16G Cruzer protected with Bitlocker), but it also solved, in a roundabout way, other Chrome issues I was having.
The previous method of speeding up a slow Chrome (moving the .ini and setting runlocal=true) worked, but keeping Chrome logged in to my account and keeping extensions logged into their particular accounts (Evernote webclipper, for example) was frustrating. Chrome was fast but I was frequently logging into my accounts several times a day.
This mod solved all that. Chrome is fast and my chrome login as well as my extension logins are all stable. Going on five days now which is, by far, a new record.
Thank you.
Works perfectly. Great job!

Made a huge difference for me.
Pages load very fast now. Was crawling along before this.
Great job! I registered just so I could comment because it means a lot to me that it runs better now. Saves me so much time at work.
