Beginner, Can apps be put on phones or tablets

As stated I am a total beginner to all this, can apps be put on my htc desire z, and motorola xoom?

I am looking for a simple spreadsheet, database and wordprocessor. They are both android machines.

Thanks in advance.

Nope

Portable apps are real desktop apps that only work on Windows or Mac/Linux with something like Wine installed. You're looking for mobile apps and you'll need to find them specifically for Android. Android can't run Windows apps. (Nor can Windows Phone or iPhone for that matter)

How about Microsoft Surface?

Since it'll be running Windows 8, it should be a tablet capable of running portable apps right?

Nope

Microsoft Surface is an ARM tablet, meaning it runs Windows RT, not real desktop Windows. This is Windows in name only in many ways as it won't work with any existing Windows apps at all. It will only support Windows Metro apps that are compiled for ARM.

And Surface Pro?

That one seems to have the full operating system.
