enable default browser check

I know that the default browser check is intentionally disabled in the portable version of firefox. Neverthless I would like to enable this check.

The reason: I do use the portable firefox located on a normal HD of my PC. The advantage is, that I can run it in several different OS- Installations. So I do have usually 3 or more installations of Windows on my PC that reside on different partitions. With Portable Firefox I won't have to configure the whole bookmarks etc. after a fresh install but can use immedately the familiar Firefox.

But I'm tired of setting firefox manually several times as default browser after some testings or Updates when IE has set itself to the standard browser again.

How can I achieve this?

Options menu

This is a standard FF option you're talking about. It's in the same place in the options menu on FFP as on FF. Just check the box that says "Always check to see if Firefox is the default browser on startup".

That does not work. Even if

That does not work. Even if I edit the prefs.js manually: After the next restart this option is disabled again.

But thanks anyway for the hint.

You can't

You can't use Firefox's default check because that would set the Firefox inside FFP to the default... NOT Firefox Portable as the default... and it would use a profile in the usual C:\Documents and Settings location. You have to manually set FFP as the default in the registry or use one of the tools floating around the forum to do this. Keep in mind that this is not a supported setup.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Thanks for the quick reply.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I did hope that FFP could perform this check automatically somehow but so I'll have to live with it. It's no big deal.

BTW your portable solution is a big andvantage for the Firefox. Thanks for the good work.

The best solution would be

The best solution would be to prevent IE from becoming the default. I could help if you provide some details like what triggers the change (if you know). There is no way to set FxP as the default automatically. You could also look up ways to making IE almost nonexistent (there are ways to do this, and sites that can show you how, but I don't know any).

Thanks for your offer.

Thanks for your offer.

Unfortunately it is not that easy to prevent IE becoming default because I occasionally re-install my Windows and then IE is default. When I try to open an RSS-Feed from within ThunderbirdP before I have ticked the 'make FF the default browser' IE pops up with the website in question.

That also happens after updating Windows and I doubt that could be prevented.

So the solution will be to close IE, open FFP and make it default again.

To use a third party tool for this purpose - as John.T.Haller did propose, is take things too far, IMHO.

But I do appreciate your willingness.

Ran into a problem

I'd been very happy with DMFFP, but then I tried rearranging my directory structure a bit. DMFFP doesn't seem to like being run a second time for a new location.

You need

to run DMFFP again and set the browser as default again.

Hmm

That's very weird.
Do you have the right permissions to change registry entries?

Yes.

It's my home PC. There's only one user profile on it, and it's an admin profile.
