Aol usually logs in and lists (although it takes some time frequently) But the sent mail filing hangs 9 times out of 10 and states it cannot list as sent, would you like to keep a copy? Why is it that it can do it some of the time? If it has the ability to log on the server as sent once, what is the issue the other times?

While it may be able to reach a server at a specific time, it could be too overloaded to allow Thunderbird to store a message in the sent folder via IMAP, hence the error message. Your best option would be to upgrade to a better mail service. Or just settle for using their webmail interface.
