Hi,
I have just installed Ubuntu on my laptop and thought that with Wine 1.4, I could get Thunderbird Portable on my USB stick to run flawlessly. However, that wasn't the case and Thunderbird could not start.
I've done a lot of tests and hope that this can help to diagnose what's wrong. My suspect after all these testings, seem to point to "prefs.js".
Scenario #1
1. Download and install fresh copy of Thunderbird Portable in hard disk.
2. Double click ThunderbirdPortable.exe.
3. Thunderbird Portable (via Wine) started up.
Conclusion: Thunderbird Portable is working.
Scenario #2
1. Download and install fresh copy of Thunderbird Portable in hard disk.
2. Copy "profile" folder from USB stick's Thunderbird Portable into Thunderbird Portable (Hard Disk)
2. Double click ThunderbirdPortable.exe.
3. Thunderbird Portable (Hard Disk) crashed.
Conclusion: Thunderbird Portable is not working.
Scenario #3
1. Download and install fresh copy of Thunderbird Portable in hard disk.
2. Copy all subfolders (such as Mail, ImapMail, etc.)in "profile" folder from USB stick's Thunderbird Portable into Thunderbird Portable (Hard Disk).
3. Double click ThunderbirdPortable.exe.
4. Thunderbird Portable (via Wine) started up.
Conclusion: Thunderbird Portable is working. No mail folders in the list (because prefs.js not copied yet)
Scenario #3
1. Download and install fresh copy of Thunderbird Portable in hard disk.
2. Copy all subfolders (such as Mail, ImapMail, etc.)in "profile" folder from USB stick's Thunderbird Portable into Thunderbird Portable (Hard Disk).
3. Copy "prefs.js" from USB stick's Thunderbird Portable into Thunderbird Portable (Hard Disk).
4. Double click ThunderbirdPortable.exe.
5. Thunderbird Portable (Hard Disk) crashed.
Conclusion: Thunderbird Portable is not working. Something in "prefs.js" caused it to crash. (I had done further tests of copying line by line of "prefs.js" and suspect that the lines starting with "mail." cause the crash.
Scenario #4
1. Download and install fresh copy of Thunderbird Portable in hard disk.
2. Click Add Account wizard and try to create an account. I have Gmail account and so I entered my name, email and password and click the button to let Thunderbird search for the IMAP and POP/SMTP data from Mozilla's database.
3. Configuration found, I click to save. The moment I click to save, Thunderbird Portable crash.
FYI: I have no problem running the Thunderbird Portable (USB stick version) in Windows. It's only when I insert it into my Ubuntu and click on the .exe file to run it via Wine 1.4, Thunderbird doesn't start anymore.
I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, Wine 1.4, Thunderbird Portable 15.
Thanks.
