Symantec detects threats in deleted emails

As the title says, Symantec detects threats in emails that have been deleted! Why does it do this and how can I stop it?

Are they emails that were flagged as having potentially malicious content before they were deleted?

If so, they would still be detected because deleting an email doesn't actually delete it, it just flags it for deletion and hides it in the mail folder. I believe you have to run a compact on the folder to fully trash messages that are marked as deleted.
