Pidgin: Support for Gaim-Encryption

I'm wondering if anyone has gotten the Gaim-Encryption Plugin for Gaim to work.

I have a lot of friends with whom when I chat with them their Gaim automatically tries to establish an encrypted session which is fine when I'm at work on the regular Gaim which is installed, but when I'm at school, my Portable Gaim doesn't support it. So they can't chat with me unless they right-click on my name and click "Turn Auto-Encryption Off". Otherwise it tries to authenticate over and over and I can't see anything they type.

I would really like to make Gaim-Encryption portable too!

Thanks,
Dean Householder

Did you try it?

Did you try installing it into Portable Gaim? It appears to be a plugin, so it should work. Off The Record, another encryption plugin which is included by default, didn't require any alterations.

How do I install it?

How would I go about installing the plugin when it's a downloadable exe that expects GAIM to be installed in order to run?

Everyone in my work and most of my friends use Gaim-Encryption already. It's too late to change to Off the Record, unfortunately.

The installer

Should really be updated so you can select Gaim's location. You could try manually copying the plugin files from a local install to the portable one. I am unfamiliar with the plugin myself. I selected Off The Record as it seemed to be the more popular of the two.

Not sure how this could work but.....

Well I copied the file encrypt.dll which I got from installing Gaim-Encryption onto my hard drive and copied it into the plugins folder and it seems to be working. I don't get it because it appears that the installer copies like 20 files over.

I confirmed it by uninstalling both Gaim-Encryption and Gaim from my computer. Then I ran the Portable Gaim and tried to chat with friends that have Gaim-Encryption and it worked. It appears in the Plugins tab in Properties, so I'd say it's working fine.

It might have something to do with my copying my .gaim profile folder over to the Portable Gaim from a working version installed on my hard drive. Perhaps there were more files in there from the install. Either way it seems to be working. Smile

Thanks for a great product!

Cool

Maybe I'll create a quick ZIP download so people don't have to install it locally. I'll peak into the plugin a bit when I have more time.
