I have a mp3 player that I want to use now so I downloaded and loaded Songbird.
The program loads the splash image but nothing else happens. CPU usage 00. I first tried the Portable version from here (Pa.c) and then I tried the full version from http://getsongbird.com/ . But neither work. It just doesn't seem to run on my Windows 7 64-bit computer. Is this just me or is this a common problem?

There's some conflict on your PC. It works fine on my Windows 7 64-bit computer. You'll need to contact the Songbird folks for assistance in figuring it out. They'll know best as most of what we handle support-wise are issues specific to portable use.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Looks like my problem is bigger than I thought it could be. I'll start by deleting some "junk" and cleaning up my pc. Thanks for the reply John. Other comments and tips are very welcome here.
