Thunderbird spamming with my email/contancts

I was notified by a friend that I sent them email encouraging them to purchase slim fast products. I informed them it wasn't me. They showed me the email on their computer and to my surprise it came from me and sent to them and two other people. One person on the list has sickle cell problem and they are so skinny now, advising them to use slim fast would cause them to die.

Is Thunderbird stealing my contacts and spamming my contacts?

My inbox does not show any spam sent, but the contacts are definitely mine.

I ran a scan of Microsoft Security Essentials on the Thunderbird app folder and it was clean. I did the same for my system and its clean too. I don't know how this is happening but it seems to be since I started using Thunderbird.

If you have similar experience or solution please advise.

I love the app but I'm not to confident of using it.

Common

This is a common tactic by spammers. Likely a mutual acquaintance with a hotmail, yahoo or google account was hacked and their address book taken. The spammers then send spam 'from' everyone in the list to others in the list. Email from addresses can be faked easily by anyone. I can send you a fake email from the president if Ifelt like it.

I agree with your comment.

I agree with your comment. But one of the contacts on the spammed email is not know to anyone but me.

You or He

If you're absolutely sure of that, then either you or he was hacked. A locally installed malware can easily harvest your contacts from Thunderbird, Outlook, Outlook Express, etc.
